The MSc in Social Research at MU Sociology provides hands-on training in research skills with real-world data, and instruction from internationally recognised staff with a passion for evidence-based research. You will work with real-world data, gaining familiarity with the toolkit of modern data-driven social research. The M.Sc. programme consists of 4 modules on research methods (including qualitative, quantitative and digital methods); a module on research and policy engagement, where researchers discuss their own engagements with policy worlds and how to understand them; and a module on societal challenges, where research specialists discuss the latest research debates on key issues such as climate change, digital lives, inequalities, democratic institutions and more. Our department is well known for its engagement in policy, political and societal dialogues and for its long practice of public sociology.
Students also complete a major thesis or work-based research under the supervision of our expert staff from MU Sociology, where they put to practice the research design and management skills they learned, typically in collaboration with an external agency and ideally as part of a research team.
