Music Theatre PhD

A PhD in Music Theatre invites you to work across media to challenge disciplinary boundaries.

You’ll study with expert faculty to produce a performance work. You support this with a portfolio of practical research activities or compositions and critical writing. You’ll also have access to our specialist facilities.

Our supervisors have experience both inside and outside of the academy, with particular expertise in:

• art practice
• production
• modernity.

We welcome research proposals in the history and theory of opera and music theatre as well as artistic practice. Situated within the transdisciplinary culture of the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, we encourage applications from varied disciplinary backgrounds.

Masters degree requirementYou’re normally expected to have the equivalent of a UK Masters degree, which will mean having completed some academic study beyond your Bachelors degree.Undergraduate degree requirementBachelors degree with a CGPA of 3.5/5.0 or 3/4.0.Subject-specific requirementsYour qualification should be in a subject related to your chosen area of research. You will also be considered for this degree if you don’t have the academic qualifications required, but can show evidence of equivalent professional experience.Please noteOur entry requirements are guidelines and we assess all applications on a case-by-case basis.

IELTS (Academic)

High level (6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component).

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. You cannot combine scores from more than one sitting of the test. Your score must be valid when you begin your Sussex course. Find out more about IELTS
