With an extra year of study, you can gain a BA (Hons) qualification and develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of contexts in which musical theatre, performance and production have developed and are practised. Today's musical theatre production industries demand highly trained, professional practitioners who can demonstrate a clear understanding of contemporary creative performance and production techniques. Core modules
Community Outreach
You collaborate with your cohort on a series of musical theatre workshops to people within the community who wish to develop performance/production skills. You create and deliver a two hour musical theatre workshop is open to people of all ages and abilities.
Developing Media Performance
You take part in the creation of a short film as either a performer, or behind the scenes as a camera operator, director, runner, writer or working on the production elements. You can either devise a new piece of film or work from an existing script, and consider the audience and appropriateness of the content, and the genre. You learn about acting for camera, develop on set skills, work collaboratively with technical staff/students and focus on media production skills, a skill that is enormously important for musical theatre performers.
Developing Technique for Performing and Production Arts
You focus on performance/production techniques for acting, singing, dance, voice, lighting, sound, stage management, costume, set design, directing, producing and writing. The module content is delivered through workshops and sessions which feature external musical theatre industry professionals.
Industry Portfolio
You create a website portfolio for the musical theatre industry. This includes a CV, headshots, images of your work, videos of performances, self-tapes and links to professional accounts (Spotlight/LinkedIn for example). You are supported in the creation of your portfolio to future proof the content and your experiences to ensure it is authentic and contemporary.
Repertory Performance
You take part in two musical theatre performances across the year through internal shows and performances which are decided by the programme team. The performance styles, include musicals, dance pieces, cabaret shows, plays, new writing, classical texts, and you could take on a variety of roles, depending on your area of specialism, including actor, singer, dancer or performer. Throughout the rehearsal and performance process you enhance your performance skills and industry professionalism by working with others, being part of a strong ensemble and ensuring you actively contribute creatively to the process.

We adopt various teaching methods in order to challenge and stimulate. These include lectures on critical theory, learner-developed seminars, practical classes for putting theory into practice, project-based work including final major performance projects, tutorials, masterclasses from visiting professionals and independent research activities.
How you are assessed
Assessment activities include a combination of assignments, presentations, practical workshops and the completion of a personal development portfolio. You also take part in a number of public performances, designed to assess both your rehearsal process and live performance.
