About

Overview

Musicology and Music Theory Departments of Turkish Music State Conservatory established Musicology and Music Theory PhD Programme under the roof of Istanbul Technical University Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences in 2002-2003. Department aims to provide high quality graduate education of academic and scientific music research.

To raise musicologists and music theorists, transmission of the knowledge through light of the research and contribution to science of music are among aims of the programme.

Vision of the Programme

The program was constituted under a contemporary education system, which employs scientific studies in areas of musicology and music theory in an interdisciplinary perspective. It is aimed to open associate programmes and provide environment for international exchange programmes in collaboration with other universities abroad.

Significance of the Programme

Musicology is systematization of music through research on music. Musicology is not only musical experience and values, but also explanation of everything we know and think relying on research and scientific methods. Educated musicians possess knowledge of music, but we cannot acknowledge them as musicologists or music theorists unless they equipped the knowledge with scientific methods of research. Musicology depends on research, data collection, and evaluation of the data with scientific methods. It is scientific field of the music. Composition and performance, known as artistic fields, are also related to the scientific field. Because science also teaches us how art is made. Science completes art and it is important to understand importance of this relationship.

Mission of the program

To raise creative musicologists and music theorists, who are eligible to be leaders, researchers, and scientists in the field of musicology.
To provide a platform for data exchange in the field of musicology.
To publish new research in the field of musicology.
To provide service of gathered data for researchers to initiate new theories in the field of musicology.
To provide scholarship for students.
To keep the program update with other institutions.
To collaborate with abroad universities and open joint programmes.

Structure of the Program

The programme is executed towards Istanbul Technical University graduate regulations and principals. Students, who fulfill application requirements, are accepted to the entrance exam.
The programme consists of 14 weeks of education and one week of exams. Total graduation credits are 24. Official language of the programme is Turkish. Students must take %30 of classes in English.
Students might register for courses from Ä°stanbul Technical University or other universities in accordance with Istanbul Technical University graduate regulations and principals. Seminars are mandatory but non-credit courses.
ITU Grading system is used for evaluation of the semester.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

Applicant’s official transcripts including all undergraduate and/or graduate level courses and their grades issued by the universities that the applicant graduated or will be graduated from.

Applicantwho will apply for PhD programs afterhis/her undergraduate degree has to have at least 3.0 Cumulative GPA out of 4.00 .
One of the Score Documents from Academic Personnel and Graduate Level Entrance Exam (ALES), GRE or GMAT including the related scores (ALES, GRE and GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.)

Applicants for Master's Programs are required to have Numerical score minimum 55 from ALES . Applicantswho will apply for PhD programs aftertheirundergraduate level degree arerequiredto have Numerical scoreminimum 80FROM ALES (ALES minimum score is not required for the Social Sciences Institute Music programs)

The minimum score required from Quantitative section of GRE is 610 (in the new system is minimum 149).

Applicants for Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences Programs can apply with GMAT certificate. GMATwitha minimum score of 450is required for these applicants.
One of the Documents of English Proficiency that is accepted according to ITU Senate principles.

TOEFL IBT/PBT,PTE, İTU English Proficiency Exam valid for 2 years.
ÜDS,KPDS,YDS, e-YDS test results are valid for 5 years . TOEFL ITP is not accepted.

English certificate is not mandatory in the Master applications.
The students admitted to any master program can complete their registration without an English certificate, but they cannot take courses until the submission of a valid English certificate. The applicants for a PhD program must deliver English certificate up to the registration period. If they do not submit a valid English certificate in the registration, they will not be registered.

ABOUT TOEFL IBT EXAM
Inaccordance with the decision taken at the meeting of ITU University Board of Directors dated 15.12.2011 and numbered 914 ; dating from the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year, IfTOEFL and IBT test results are from the testing centers in Turkey ,only the results from the exams conducted in the centers in state and private universities are accepted by ITU. TOEFL home edition can be used due to the pandemic.

For each applied program two recommendation letters are required.For MSc applications, oneof these recommendation letters is required to be prepared by an academic instructor who the student worked with. For PhD applications, one of the recommendation letters must be supplied from the supervisor that the candidatesare planning to study together during their doctorate education.
Reference letter is uploaded to the system by the person who is giving the reference, not by the candidate
P.S. 1:Required ALES, GRE, GMAT minimum scores and minimum cummulative GPA may differ according to Master’s and Ph.D. programs . Requirements for programs and quotas are given at the Registar’s Office Web page :https://www.sis.itu.edu.tr/

If you want to make changes or update anything after finalizing your submission, you have to click the link under your form until it is confirmed by Registrar's office .
Candidates whose application has been approved by the Registrar's Office cannot change their Appointment Dates and Application İnformation.
