    About

    Qualify in two years as a Mental Health Nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and enjoy a flexible study approach.
    Overview

    This full time two-year MSc Nursing (Pre-registration) programme is for graduates from any discipline who meet the necessary entry criteria to study and work in the UK.

    During this programme, you will learn in a variety of practice settings, and study contemporary evidence-based nursing modules. To facilitate a breadth of authentic educational experiences, you will learn with inter-professional health and social care teams, and from people accessing health and social care support. You will become a life-long learner; a critical thinker who supports and influences the highest quality evidence base and provides exceptional person-centred care.

    You will enter the nursing profession as a confident, proficient and autonomous practitioner, with a strong understanding of current health and social care environments.  You will have the skills to lead, innovate and influence future provision to effectively meet the needs of people.

    The School of Health and Social Care is based at our Sighthill Campus in the city of Edinburgh.

    The deadline for January 2023 applications has been extended to 29 August 2022. Applicants who reach the next stage of the admissions process will then be invited to submit a portfolio after this date.

    Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence and leadership in nursing care. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever-evolving health and social care arena.
     

    Our nursing programme takes account of the key initiatives in health and social care at local, national and international levels and is developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

    You will learn alongside your colleagues on your programme as well as colleagues studying their master's in Adult Health Nursing, colleagues from all fields of nursing on our Bachelor of Nursing (BN) programme and colleagues from our Allied Health and Social Work programmes. Each of your six practice placements will be specific to the Mental Health field of nursing. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills and competences to work within a variety of health and social care teams and settings. The programme will enable you to specialise in your chosen field of nursing to deliver high quality, evidence-informed person-centred care.

    On completion, this course will have supported you to become a creative, autonomous, innovative and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice incorporating current developments within your chosen field of nursing.

    Additional mandatory costs

    Students are expected to pay for their registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, at successful conclusion of their programme, آ£120.

    The MSc Nursing (Pre-registration) programme at Edinburgh Napier University aims to cultivate informed decision makers and life-long learners. Nursing is a fluid and constantly changing entity and we work with our students to help them develop the skills to welcome and withstand the changing demands of our evolving profession and operate at the forefront of nursing.

    It is anticipated that as a critically reflective practitioner with excellent leadership skills, following a period of consolidation post award, our MSc registrants will be able to apply for roles nationally or internationally, within the NHS, Social Care or in other private and public sectors; examples might include:

    How to Apply

    How to use the online application form

    Here’s some key information about the application form to keep in mind while you're completing it:

    • You don't need to complete your application in one session - you can save it and return to it later. You'll get an email with a link to continue your application
    • When you've completed a page, click on the proceed button at the base of the form
    • If you need to return to a previous page, click on the save button first
    • If you need to exit at any point, save your progress by clicking on the save button
    • Save your progress regularly, as the form will time out if there has been no activity on the page for four hours. You'll then be asked to re-enter your log in details to continue with your application
    • Refer to the help text at each section of the application if you need guidance about a particular section of the process.
    What to expect 

    We will typically be in touch within five days of your application submission. Here's what will happen once you have submitted your application:

    1. Application review

    When we receive your application we will: 

    • Check your qualifications against the minimum entry criteria
    • Check your references, once they've been submitted
    • Review your personal statement 
    • Check your evidence of English language proficiency, if applicable.

    2. Extra information

    For some courses, you need to provide examples of your work or attend an interview. If this is the case, we’ll get in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the course page on our website.

    3. Application outcome

     We’ll let you know the outcome of your application by email. There are three possible outcomes:

    • Unconditional (meaning we don't need anything else from you) 
    • Conditional (meaning you'll need to provide us with some more information)
    • Unsuccessful.

    4. Your response 

    You can accept your offer by emailing pgadmissions@napier.ac.uk. If your offer is conditional and you need to submit any extra information, like your degree certificate or a reference, you should do this as soon as possible.

    Interviews and Portfolios

    Some of our postgraduate courses require you to attend an interview, or submit extra information or examples of your work. If this is the case, someone will be in touch to arrange this with you. You can find out if this applies to your course on the relevant course page on the website.

    Here are some of examples of courses which require an interview:

    Interview formats will vary by course, and can range from group interviews and discussions to a quick chat one-on-one with your programme leader. You will be given this information by email.

    • MFA Advanced Film Practice 

    What you are asked to present and in what format will vary by course. You might be asked to submit your work digitally, or in some cases you will be asked to bring a portfolio with you to an interview. You will be given this information by email.

    If you're an international student...

    If you're not in the country, Skype interviews can often be arranged by email after you have received your invitation.
