Nutrition and Dietetics/Nutrition, Fitness, and Health (double major)

    About

If you want to combine exercise science and nutrition, the double major in Nutrition and Dietetics/Nutrition, Fitness, and Health (DNFH) is the perfect combination.

Purdue offers one of few programs within the United States that combines these areas of study. This is a popular double major for our students, achievable over 4 years, adding only an additional 8-16 credit hours. Students have the opportunity to gain experience in the collegiate athletics setting under the supervision of multiple Sports Registered Dietition Nutritionists (RDNs) while receiving academic credit.

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining health and in the prevention and treatment of diseases. RDNs are the food and nutrition experts who translate the science of nutrition into personalized recommendations to help people prevent and manage medical conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and many more. To become an RDN, students must complete required coursework as well as 1,200 hours of supervised practice from an accredited program and then pass a national examination. Required courses include biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition assessment, diet selection and planning, and food service systems management.

At Purdue, students complete all required coursework for dietetics in the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DPND), and then apply to either an outside dietetics internship or the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) at Purdue to complete the required supervised practice.  Upon completion of supervised practice, students are eligible to sit for the national registration examination for dietitians.

Purdue's placement rate into supervised practice (internship or CPD) is approximately 90%, compared to a national dietetic internship placement rate of approximately 50%. Additionally, we offer an Individualized Supervised Practice Pathway (ISPP) as an alternative route for students who do not secure a traditional dietetic internship.

The Purdue DPND, CPD and ISPP are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)

With a focus on health and nutrition, dietetics is an excellent major to fulfill the pre-requisite requirements of professional health programs. The curriculum may be easily modified to meet the requirements for most professional health programs such as medicine, physician assistant, physical therapy, dentistry, public health and veterinary medicine. Students interested in this option may also consider a double major in Nutrition Science (NUSC).

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

For most first-time college students (future freshman) a complete application includes:

    • The application itself
    • Purdue-specific questions from the application
    • Self-reported high school grades
    • Self-reported ACT or SAT test scores*
    • Proof of English proficiency (for citizens of non-English speaking countries)
    • The application fee (or qualified fee waiver)

Students apply to Purdue using the Common Application. This application requires you to provide a personal essay and answer Purdue-specific questions. View current essay questions.

We accept SAT or ACT scores and have no preference on which test is taken. You may report the best scores from across different tests. If able, you should take one or the other in the spring of your junior year in preparation for the November 1 Early Action deadline that encompasses scholarship consideration.

When you apply, you are able to report best components from different test dates. School codes for Purdue West Lafayette: ACT – 1230; SAT – 1631.

*For Spring, Summer, and Fall 2023, Purdue is test flexible. This means that if a student can take an SAT or ACT, we prefer they do so. However, we recognize that possible cancellations and postponement of national standardized tests due to pandemic restrictions may be impacting students’ applications. With that in mind, we will move forward and review any application from a student who is unable to take a standardized test.

Looking ahead: In 2024, Purdue will return to requiring the SAT or ACT test score(s) for admission consideration.
