    About

    At Robert Gordon University, the MSc Oil and Gas Engineering course produces fit-for-purpose engineers who can make an effective contribution from an early stage. Developed in close collaboration with industry, the course will enable you to develop a critical approach to oil and gas engineering and gain strong project management and teamwork skills.

    The course is aimed at students who wish to work in the oil and gas industry and specialise in offshore operations. It will prepare you for a range of professional careers through suitable flexible study options. It has been developed in close collaboration with industry which ensures the specialist subject areas relevant to the oil and gas life-cycle covered are up-to-date, and provide the essential knowledge and skills required for an engineering career within the upstream oil and gas industry.

    Term 1

    In Term 1, you will study topics such as Subsurface, Wells, Facilities and Engineering Project Management. On completion, you could exit this stage with a PgCert Oil and Gas Engineering.

    Term 2

    In Term 2, you will study topics including Well Completions and Subsea Systems, Drilling Technology, Environmental Impact and Risk Management, and Materials and Corrosion Science. On completion, you could exit this stage with a PgDip Oil and Gas Engineering.

    Term 3

    Term 3 is the final term, where you will focus on the Individual Project Report. Successful completion will award the MSc Oil and Gas Engineering.

    Learning Methods

    You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshop sessions and external speakers, and work on group project case studies, team activities, and presentations. This allows you to collaborate with colleagues as you would within multi-discipline teams in the energy sector. Throughout the course, content is complemented by practical work, allowing you to support your theoretical development by providing real-life simulation.

    Activity Summary

    Each module comprises up to 52 hours of lectures and tutorials. Significant additional private study is expected during each module.

    You will be supported through our online virtual learning environment (VLE),CampusMoodle, where you can access a wide variety of resources and other learning support materials, including videos, e-books, journals, the Society of Petroleum Engineering and the SPE database. If you are studying online, the discussion forum groups will be a key part of the course, actively engaging you with the course materials, the course personnel and your fellow students.

    Independent Study

    Significant additional private study is expected during each module. You’ll work autonomously and take responsibility for your own learning and professional and academic development. The suggested hours-of-study-per-week and other information is detailed in each Module Descriptor.

    • 3 written exams, typically for 2-2.5 hours

    • 1 dissertation
    • 1 oral assessment
    • 2 group critiques

    • Students who do not meet our direct entry requirements may be able to undertake a pre-masters programme through our International College at Robert Gordon University

    English Program Requirements

    Most postgraduate courses require an IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum of 5.5 in each area. Some courses require a higher English Language score. Always check the relevant course page and our English Language Requirements page before applying.
