    About

    This degree will give you the skills needed to deliver essential services in the operating theatre and give high standards of perioperative care to patients.

    Operating Department Practitioners play an essential role in the delivery of services in the operating theatre. As an ODP, you will play an important part of the theatre team and work alongside surgeons and anaesthetists.

    Work placements

    To give you hands-on experience of working with patients, combined with plenty of opportunities to apply your theoretical knowledge in the operating theatre environment, youâll spend approximately 50% of your time in clinical practice during the course of your studies. Your placements will take place at a variety of hospitals across Staffordshire and Shropshire. You will work in a range of surgical areas, including general and abdominal surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, and ear, nose and throat.

    Youll develop your skills in clinical laboratories that are equipped with some of the most advanced teaching equipment available. In our state-of-the-art simulated Operating Theatre, for example, youll train in the delivery of basic care, right through to managing emergency situations.

    This will enable you to reach a level of confidence and proficiency before carrying out procedures on real patients.

    To give you hands-on experience of working with patients, combined with plenty of opportunities to apply your theoretical knowledge in the operating theatre environment, youll spend approximately 50% of your time in clinical practice during the course of your studies.

    Academic year

    The course operates on a modular basis. Each credit taken equates to a total study time of around 10 hours. Total study time includes scheduled teaching, independent study and assessment activity.

    All students take a total of 120 credits per level and 360 credits for the degree as a whole. Your overall grade for the course and your degree classification are based on the marks obtained for modules taken at levels 5 and 6.

    Professional body accreditation

    Approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for the purpose of providing eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC as an operating department practitioner.

    Undergraduate (bachelors) degrees

    To apply for an undergraduate (bachelors) degree you need one of the following qualifications:

    • Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade GPA of 2.5
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 28 points overall
    • Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

    Integrated masters and two-year accelerated degrees

    To apply for an integrated masters or two-year accelerated degree you need one of the following qualifications:

    •  Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade of 2.8
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 30 points overall
    • Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

    English Program Requirements

    The majority of our undergraduate bachelor degree courses require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, we also accept a wide range of qualifications from around the world. The following qualifications are acceptable for most of our Bachelor degree courses.

    Our ODP graduates provide a broad range of hospital services in the operating department and associated areas, such as intensive care and emergency departments. Some choose to continue their studies through degree and higher degree pathways. Others work abroad in countries such as New Zealand and Australia.

    Your qualification could ultimately lead to roles in management, teaching or specialisation – in areas such as resuscitation, intensive care or accident and emergency environments. 

    Graduate earning potential, starting as band 5 in the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale at £25,655; 100% of our students are in work within 6 months of qualifying. (2022)

    Potential career progression to Team Leader and Manager in the theatre environment or specialising in other areas such as Critical Care, Emergency Care, Pre-operative Assessment; Education and many more. The scope of practice increases as does the demand for ODPs in healthcare in the NHS and the private sector, with worldwide opportunities.
