    Program details

    The Department of Dental Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences offers graduate instruction and research leading to a Master of Dentistry degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The program includes a four-year hospital residency, after which a postgraduate training certificate is awarded.

    Expected duration: 4 years

    Tuition and fees:
    Students pay the yearly program fee for every year they are registered (refer to Graduate tuition and fees).

    The MDent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program requires the completion of 48 credit hours of coursework, all clinical off service rotations and assignments as set out in the hospital residency training and an essay/research project.

    The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) and is also recognized by the American Dental Association. Completion of the program provides eligibility to the examinations of the take the examinations of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), National Dental Specialty Exams (NDSE) and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).

    Clinical requirements

    The program provides progressive training in oral and maxillofacial surgery including clinical rotations in the Health Sciences Centre in the departments of:

    • Anesthesia
    • Otolaryngology
    • Internal medicine
    • Surgical oncology
    • Head and neck surgery
    • Critical intensive care
    • Emergency room medicine
    • Plastic surgery

    Essay/research project

    Residents are required to write an essay or carry out a research project in a specified area selected in consultation with the department and publish in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This to be completed and presented in the fourth year. Additional courses may be assigned in support of the project.

    Stipend

    • Residents will be members of the Professional Association of Residents and Interns of Manitoba (PARIM).

    The Master of Dentistry in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery program prepares dentists to become qualified, ethical and proficient Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons to pursue careers in clinical practice, academics, and research in Canada and across the world. Our graduates gain experience in all major areas of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery with a greater focus on maxillofacial trauma and craniofacial anomalies.

    For entrance into the Master's program:

    • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution;
    • A minimum grade of 70% in individual courses or B equivalent in the last two years of study, where a typical grade is:
    UM Scale Jordanian Scale
    A+ 90-100% (Excellent)
    A 80-89% (Very good)
    B+ 75-79% (Good)
    B 70-74% (Good)
    C+ 65-69% (Acceptable)
    C 60-64% (Acceptable)
    D 50-59% (Poor)
    F 0-49% (Failure)

    For entrance into the PhD program:

    • Requirements listed above (see Master’s program) plus successful completion of a Master’s degree from a recognized institution.

    How to Apply

    The application is split into different sections and asks you for your personal information, post- secondary education, a list of recommenders and more.

    Education history

    If you attended a college that is associated with a university, you should list the university in the education history. For example, if you attended Jawahar Engineering College, which is affiliated with Anna University, you should list Anna University in your education history.

    Making changes to your application

    If you haven’t submitted your application yet, you can change your email address by going to your Biographical Data page and selecting the "Change Email" link found under the Email Address section. If you have already submitted your application, go to your Student Portal, select your application, select application overview, scroll to the bottom and select "Change Email Address."

    Once you submit your application, you are no longer able to make changes. If you have made an error on your application, please email graduate.admissions@umanitoba.ca with your correction(s). Please include your name as it appears on your application and your applicant ID with your request.

    Submit your recommender information

    All letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to the university by the recommenders. You must formally request recommendations within the online application.

    After you enter your recommender’s name and email on the online application, they must complete the recommendation using our online system. We will not accept or upload paper copies of recommendation letters. Please be aware that helping or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.

    The referee process is a confidential process. All letters of recommendations are provided to the University of Manitoba in the strictest of confidence and will not be shared with the applicant. Participating in the drafting of your recommendation letter is discouraged. Helping write or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.
