About this degree
With its inaugural year in 1986, originally as the MSc in Community Paediatrics, this postgraduate programme is part of the longest-running paediatric health MSc in London. We continually aim to improve it based on student feedback and changing demands within the Health Service and Academic sectors. Teaching takes place at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS ICH) in close collaboration with colleagues from Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with lectures from national and international experts across most clinical and research areas.
You will learn about the theory and practice of paediatric intensive care medicine (PICM), covering general issues, cardiac critical care, and transport of the critically ill child. Content includes topics from the UK and international PICM curricula and will help towards building the knowledge and understanding required to undertake the European Paediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care professional qualification.
Who this course is for
The programme is designed for doctors, nurses and associated professionals in clinical roles within acute paediatric environments. Learning will provide:
- An excellent foundation for trainees looking to enter paediatric intensive care medicine training
- An introduction to research methods and techniques for those seeking an academic career in PICM
- High-quality continuing professional development for those already in this field
What this course will give you
UCL GOS ICH pursues an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to enhance understanding, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of childhood diseases. Our research and educational portfolio covers a broad range of paediatric issues, from molecular genetics to population health sciences, and our structure facilitates interdisciplinary work and allows flexibility for the development of new areas of investigation.
Our close relationship with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children means that much of our research and teaching is carried out on a joint basis. You will benefit from excellent facilities in both laboratory and non-laboratory subjects.
This is the only taught programme anywhere across Europe that covers such a wide spectrum of paediatric intensive care medicine. Modules take you through the fundamentals of PICM, whilst enhancing knowledge, critical appraisal, research skills, and readiness for careers in acute paediatrics, in particular the care of critically ill and deteriorating children. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a supervised dissertation or research project of your choice in PICM. These can include clinical through basic science/laboratory studies.
