    Paramedic Science BSc(Hons)

    About

As a paramedic you will often be the first healthcare professional at the scene of incidents requiring pre-hospital care. Working in conditions which can be challenging and rapidly changing, you will assess a patients condition and make potentially lifesaving decisions about treatment and hospital transfer.

Working as a paramedic offers many employment experiences in the UK and further afield. There are opportunities for you to undertake an international placement, and explore practice in a different environment and culture.

Accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council and endorsed by the College of Paramedics, this Paramedic Science Degree gives you everything you need to become a paramedic.

Successful completion of this course will make you eligible to apply for registration as a paramedic with the HCPC.

To ensure you can confidently apply theory to practice, youll spend 50% of your year on placement with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and in other healthcare settings. You will also practise in our state of the art clinical skills and simulation suite and community flat.

Recognising that patients come first in everything the NHS does, and the values of the NHS constitution – respect, dignity, compassion and working together for patients – are embedded in our curriculum.

    Course structure

The syllabus covers the core areas necessary for a career as a paramedic, including physical, social and behavioural sciences, pharmacology and research methods.

The course is divided evenly between theory and practice, focusing on the development of clinical skills through placements with working paramedics. Placements are designed to build progressively and to link up with the rest of your studies. The hours spent in clinical practice will increase in your final year as you make final preparations for the workplace.

You will share some of your learning with other health specialities, enabling you to benefit from sharing and collaborating with fellow students (eg midwives).

As well as through essays, exams and poster presentations, we monitor your progress using practical assessments. Our Flexible Learning Environment is equipped with video cameras and microphones to record and replay your responses to simulated emergency scenarios, and we place a huge emphasis on your performance in these tests.

Making sure that what you learn with us is relevant, up to date and what employers are looking for is our priority, so courses are reviewed and enhanced on an ongoing basis. When you have applied to us, you’ll be told about any new developments through Student View.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

We require students taking the Tawjihi (secondary school leaving certificate) to take and successfully complete an international foundation year or equivalent.

Jordanian Community College Diplomas can be considered on a case by case basis, and may be considered for advanced entry subject to admissions assessment.

    English Program Requirements

COVID-19 continues to disrupt exams and English language testing in some parts of the world. For 2022 entry, we have expanded the number of qualifications we are able to accept. If you have, or are sitting, one of the qualifications listed here and it meets our validity policy then you do not need to take an IELTS test, even if we asked you to do so in your offer. Please let us know and send a copy of your results so we can check your qualification.

    • English courses from other UK universities, subject to subject to being awarded from an accredited institution and at the CEFR B2 minimum levels required and meeting all four components.
    • A bachelors or masters degree from an accredited university in the UK or a Home Office majority English-speaking country.
    • TOEFL iBT At Home test – check the TOEFL website for more information about which countries are operating this test and the test eligibility.

    • Occupational English Test (OET) – accepted for Medicine and a range of allied health profession courses, including Pharmacy, which have vocational training elements.

If you need additional English language training we have pre-sessional courses available.

All qualifications are subject to our normal admissions checks and the above is only a summary and not a guarantee that your qualification will definitely be accepted. If you are applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate taught course, contact the enquiries and admissions team for more support and guidance. If you are applying for a postgraduate research degree, get in touch with the doctoral college team.

We will also continue accept the standard English language qualifications detailed below.

    Career

Working as a paramedic, no two days are the same. You’ll operate in different locations and need to think on your feet to deal with the diverse challenges that you will face. Paramedics work with patients, families and communities in primary care, acute and critical care settings.
