The Primary PGCE (QTS) programme is made up of the following three modules:

    • Studies and Professional Issues in Research in Education (SPIRE)
    • Curriculum Studies
    • School Experience

    SPIRE

The SPIRE module focuses specifically on issues with the highest impact on young peoples' experience of education in the 21st Century. You will be asked to consider a range of issues relating to diversity and inclusion, and engage with research and policy while linking all of this to your own experience in the classroom.

    Curriculum Studies

The Curriculum Studies module for those following a 5-11 or 7-11 pathway has a choice of specialisms. Currently, these choices include:

    • Children's Literature
    • Maths in Action and Profound
    • Complex Special Educational Needs

Those applying for the Early Years pathway will focus on this aspect specifically for their curriculum studies module which will give you the opportunity to understand in greater depth the principles that inform effective early years practice. You will also be introduced to key principles, theorists, and practice that is so important when considering how best to support young children. You will have the opportunity to practice and apply your learning during your school placements in the EYFS and Key Stage 1.

You may also apply to the Primary PGCE (QTS) Programme through the following course codes. These programmes all have a different Curriculum Studies specialism.

    • Primary with Mathematics with Goldsmiths (2M3G)
    • Primary with Modern Languages at Goldsmiths (2M3K)

Regardless of your choice of specialism, this module asks you to draw together theory and practice to develop a deep and focused understanding of contemporary classroom practice.

    School Experience

You will spend a minimum of 120 days in a school which will be divided into two-block school experiences. During your placement, you will have the opportunity to practise and apply the knowledge and skills learned in university sessions in the age phase(s) you have chosen to focus on.

The Primary PGCE Programme at Goldsmiths offers you the opportunity to specialise in one of three age phases.

    • 3-7 (with Placement in EYFS and Key Stage 1)
