    About

Part of the medical team helping a mother to regain movement after a stroke. Getting an athlete back on the pitch after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. Easing a 4 year's old long-term breathing problems, caused by cystic fibrosis.

All of these scenarios have one thing in common; a physiotherapist.

Amongst a team of skilled healthcare professionals – including doctors and nurses – physiotherapists independently identify, assess and analyse physical problems caused by injury, illness or ageing and treat them by taking a holistic approach using skills such as manual therapy, exercise or therapeutic handling.

Our three-year course incorporates the core values of the NHS constitution to help prepare you for the challenges of working as a physiotherapist in contemporary he

    Course information

Our aim is to help you become a confident and independent physiotherapist. We want you to make informed decisions about the best way to care for your patients.

You’ll be based in our contemporary Brooks building, with access to our real-world clinical equipment and facilities. Day to day, you’ll be taught using a variety of methods, including lectures, tutorials, group work and practical classes. You'll practice your skills and techniques during simulated patient scenarios in our physiotherapy practice rooms. We have seven dedicated practice rooms which are available for you to book out, giving you a safe space to develop your expertise in a supportive environment.

It takes practical as well as academic training to gain the skills you need to become a physiotherapist. And nothing beats hands-on experience in a practice setting – that’s why you’ll spend one-third of this course on placements, completing them in each year of study.

    Additional requirements

Applicants who fulfil entry requirements for the BSc Physiotherapy programme will be forwarded to the next stage of the admissions selection process. At this stage, the personal statement and reference is reviewed by a member of the Admissions Team. The purpose of this is to select which applicants to interview. From the personal statement we are looking for information in four areas; if an area is not addressed, it may significantly disadvantage your application. We therefore strongly advise you to include information from all relevant areas detailed below.

    1-Reasons for choosing Physiotherapy:

It is vital that you tell us why you wish to be a physiotherapist and explain your reasons. Remember there is no correct answer to this question.

    2-Insight into Physiotherapy

It is important that you have some knowledge of the wide range of physiotherapy specialties. It is also useful to undertake work experience, such as shadowing a physiotherapist or work in another caring role. Tell us about these experiences e.g. what treatment the physiotherapist provided and how the treatment impacted the patient. We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to arrange work experience but remember that physiotherapists and other carers work in a range of settings including hospitals, community health centers, care homes, industry, and private practice. If you have been unable to get experience to date, tell us what you have done to find out about physiotherapy and any forthcoming visits you have arranged.

3-Ability to demonstrate a caring and empathetic nature

As physiotherapy is a caring profession, can you demonstrate some caring experience that may or may not be physiotherapy related. Can you tell us about your ability to care and empathise and have you any practical evidence of this e.g., voluntary or charity work?

    4- Interests/hobbies

We would like to know how you spend your time outside of work or study. Tell us why you pursue these interests or hobbies and if you have achieved any outside recognition e.g., awards. We realise that some applicants may have more opportunities than others to pursue a wide range of interests, however we would like to understand how you utilise the spare time you have and what you have gained from undertaking these activities e.g., communication skills.

All candidates must have evidence of study at Level 3 or equivalent within the 3 years prior to application and must provide an academic reference.

A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this programme. In addition, students who have resided outside the UK will be required to provide evidence of a satisfactory overseas police check. Instructions on how to complete these checks will be provided once you hold a firm offer for this course.

Satisfactory occupational health clearance is also required to participate in this course. Pending Government consultation, it is not currently clear if this will include a requirement for students deployed on placement in CQC regulated activities in England to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Our placement providers and future employers may require this so, if you are considering this course, we would strongly advise you to take your covid-19 vaccines when due.

    Career

    Career prospects

Graduates from our course usually begin their physiotherapy careers by working as band 5 physiotherapists, on rotation positions in NHS hospitals. Some of our recent graduates are working for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust and for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

However, as a chartered physiotherapist, you could work in the NHS or the private sector. The organisations you might work at include hospitals, sports clubs, in the community and care homes, and schools.

You may also decide to refine your skills and specialise in a particular area, such as musculoskeletal, neurological or cardiorespiratory, or focus on women’s health or mental health. We offer several postgraduate qualifications, such as our MSc Advanced Physiotherapy course.
