    About

    About the course This Extended Major provides the foundation of studies for direct entry in to the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) masters degree for entry into professional practice as a podiatrist. This course prepares graduates with the clinical and professional attributes required for successful entry to the entry-to-practice DPM. It covers pre-clinical biomedical and podiatric health sciences as well as foundations of podiatric clinical skills. It will provide students the background knowledge across all the biomedical scientific disciplines including, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, haematology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and public health. These disciplines are integrated throughout the course. Clinical communication, professional content and research skills are presented throughout the major. The major will also include studies on aspects of Australian society and culture, including Aboriginal health and migrant and refugee health. It also contains foundational learning about the role of a podiatrist and introduces the student to pre-clinical practical podiatry training. This major involves detailed study of the life and health sciences, particularly podiatric health science, lower limb anatomy and physiology. Students will begin to develop their practical clinical skills by working in both simulated clinical laboratory environments in and functioning clinical spaces to learn and practice various podiatric clinical skills. There is an strong emphasis on professional identity and engaging in professionalism in practice – which is threaded longitudinally through level three of the major. Discipline specific units in level three of this extended major include – body systems, anatomy and cutaneous science, biomechanics, research and evidence in practice, clinical podiatric practice and pharmacotherapeutics for podiatrists. It also contains foundational learning about the role of a podiatrist and introduces the student to pre-clinical practical podiatry training.

    This extended major course prepares MJD-PHMSC graduates with the clinical and professional attributes required for successful entry to the entry-to-practice Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree.

    Graduates from the MJD-PHMSC are also eligible to apply to the Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council to register and work as Allied Health Assistants in Podiatric practice – with the foundational podiatry skill set developed in level 3 of the major.

    Successful graduates of this extended major, are eligible for credit towards the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine course. Graduates will be able to complete a five-year (rather than 6 year) pathway, to achieve a bachelor's degree with an extended major as well as a professional extended master's degree in Podiatric Medicine.

    The Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (91870) is accredited by the Podiatry Accreditation Committee, Ahpra.
