    Preventive Veterinary Medicine

    About

Using state-of-the-art methods in epidemiology, the Preventive Veterinary Medicine Program prepares veterinarians to investigate and evaluate disease and production problems in animal populations and to design, evaluate, and implement disease control or other veterinary services programs. Faculty in the School of Veterinary Medicine and other collaborating faculty carry out research on a wide variety of animal diseases, on microbial and parasitic zoonoses, veterinary public health, food and water-borne infections in humans, wildlife diseases and wildlife management, animal health economics, animal production, biostatistics, veterinary medical data management, and computer applications in veterinary medicine. The one-year program involves course work, a research project, and a series of electives, which permit the student to select one of the areas of emphasis in population health, food safety, public health and zoonoses, wildlife disease and ecology, ecosystem health, international health, or independent study.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

UC Davis offers admission to applicants who have the highest potential for graduate study and who, with the benefit of graduate education, are most likely to contribute substantially to their academic or professional fields through teaching, research or professional practice. UC Davis views as a high priority the enrollment of graduate students from different backgrounds and demographic groups.

    1. A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) from the institution where you have earned or will earn your bachelor's degree.
    2. By the time they enroll, successful applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent that is comparable to a degree from the University of California both in distribution of academic subject matter and in scholarship achievement. Regional accreditation for U.S. institutions and authorization by a national higher education authority for international institutions (at the time the degree was earned) are used as the eligibility standard.
    3. Application fee ($120 for domestic applicants, $140 for international applicants, or possible fee waiver for participants in approved Graduate Preparatory Programs)

    English Program Requirements

A strong understanding of the English language is important to your success at UC Davis. If you have been studying in the United States for fewer than three (3) years and your native language and school language of instruction prior to your study in the United States was not English, you must demonstrate English proficiency. Meeting this requirement through the AP exam, IB exams or transferable college courses also satisfy the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).
