    Introduction

    In a nutshell

    This programme will help apprentices develop their skills, knowledge and understanding to carry out the role of a police constable in a competent, safe, and lawful manner. This is an incredible opportunity for those who are passionate about delivering the highest quality policing, to really make a difference to communities who deserve the best.

    Alongside traditional training methods, the programme uses a range of approaches and resources to allow you to develop your critical thinking and become a confident independent learner. The use of simulation exercises will be a key feature of the programme as these exercises promote the value of critical and evaluative thinking. There are a range of teaching and learning strategies for this programme which will provide students with a combination of academic skills, and knowledge alongside operational skills.

    What you need to know

    National Assessment

    Recruitment to GMP is subject to successful completion of the National Assessment Centre process alongside specific GMP requirements.

    English Language Requirements

    International applicants will be required to show proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.5, with no element below 6.0, is proof of this. If you need to improve your written and spoken English, you might be interested in our English language courses.

    Standard entry requirements

    GCSE

    GCSE Mathematics and English grade C/grade 4 or above in both or equivalent e.g. or Functional Skills Level 2 or Adult Numeracy.

    You must fulfil the GCSE entry requirements as well as the requirements listed below.

    Alternative entry requirements

    If you do not possess these qualifications, you may still be suitable for entry providing you meet the level 2 criteria above and can demonstrate Accreditation of Prior learning (AP).

    Other requirements

    • Fitness: We also want to make you aware at this early stage of the requirements for the fitness test. This is a test of endurance whereby you will you will be asked to run along a 15 metre track in time with a series of bleeps, which become increasingly faster to level 5.4.
    • Age: Candidates aged 17 and above may apply to become a police officer and if successful may take up appointment once they reach the age of 18.
    • Tattoos: Certain tattoos may exclude you from employment with GMP, this depends on where they are on your body and what they may depict.
    • Convictions and Cautions: If you do have any criminal convictions or cautions on record you may still apply, eligibility will depend on the age and nature of the offence.
    • Membership of groups and organisations: You will not be able to join GMP if you are a member of a group and/or organisation that contradicts our values or ethics and our commitment to inclusion.
    • Previous applications: You must not have had a Police Officer application rejected by GMP, or another Force in the last 3 months to apply to GMP.

    What about after uni?

    Upon graduating, you will hold a (BSC Hons) Professional Policing Practise degree. The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills, experience and knowledge required to enable you to demonstrate your competence as a police constable.
