Youll be taught five different counselling approaches:
- Person-centred
- Cognitive behavioural
- Psychodynamic
- Attachment
- Systemic
Youll also be encouraged to reflect on your own integrative approach as it develops over the course.
As a part-time student, youll normally complete the course over two years.
Youll need to undertake a counselling placement of at least 100 hours, 50 hours of work-based learning and at least 20 hours of approved personal therapy.
Youll attend a compulsory residential weekend near the start of the course which offers space to focus on personal development, skills and group dynamics in a tranquil setting.
There are also two compulsory Saturday day schools in both Year 1 and Year 2.
Teaching
Teaching includes formal lectures, small and large group work, triads, discussions, guided reading, video presentations, demonstrations and counselling sessions. During the training, youll take on the role of both counsellor and client, and explore your own reflexivity and self-awareness. In Year 2, with permission, there will be the opportunity to review audio recordings of actual practitioner-client sessions.
Youll be required to critique an audio recording of a client on placement as part of the skills portfolio assessment.
Assessment
Among other activities, during Years 1 and 2 assessments include essays and presentations on ethics, theory, skills critiques and personal development activities. In Year 2 youll also be assessed on your critique of audio from an actual client session.
Learning support
In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).
Additional support
Our Student Inclusion Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
Feedback
Youll receive constructive feedback on all work submitted for assessment. Feedback is intended to help you learn and develop, and youre encouraged to discuss it with your personal tutor. Youll be continually assessed on your skills during the triad sessions.
Feedback is normally provided within 20 working days following submission of work.
