    About

Overview Quantitative and Computational BiologyApply to the Quantitative Biology BSc program offered by University of Southern California. The Department of Quantitative and Computational Biology (QCB)  began as Computational Molecular Biology (CMB) group in 1982 in the Department of Mathematics. At this time, the group launched one of the first Ph.D. programs in computational biology in the world, leading to a rigorous degree in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) that builds computational biology training on graduate-level classes in computer science, mathematics, and statistics. The group was renamed Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) group in 2001 and merged with the existing Molecular Biology (MB) section forming the Molecular and Computational Biology (MCB) section of the Department of Biological Sciences (BISC). The CBB group moved in 2005 into a new building, Ray R. Irani Hall, and received in 2017 additional space in Michelson Hall where the group integrates with activities of the Michelson Center of Convergent Bioscience. The CBB group launched in 2017 an elite undergraduate major in Quantitative Biology (QBIO). In 2018, the CBB group reorganized as section of the Department of Biological Sciences, with independent faculty hiring, evaluations, and promotions as Quantitative and Computational Biology (QCB) section and in 2021 became a full fledge Department within the Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences.
