Residual Stresses in Thermal Spray Coatings

    About

This course provides an understanding of the residual stresses in thermal spray coatings, and broad coverage of general residual stress testing of thermal spray coatings. This course is delivered in partnership with Heriot-Watt University.

Measurement of residual stress in thermal spray coatings plays an important part in the evaluation of coating quality. This course will provide an insight into recent advances in and an understanding of the residual stresses in thermal spray coatings. Together with broad coverage of residual stress measurement, the course will include various thermal spray methods, the origin of residual stresses and material and thermal spray process parameters and methods to measure residual stresses in thermal spray coatings.

Examining residual stress observations, the course will help you to understand contributing factors such as powder materials, substrate, heat & thermodynamics, elastic/plastic deformation properties, phase transformations, stress gradients, different methods to measure residual stresses and finally management of residual stresses in thermally sprayed components.

The course will include theory, protocols for thermal spray coating residual stress measurement and analysis with examples and applications.

    • Background of thermal spray coatings
    • Analytical methods
    • Curvature methods
    • Material removal methods
    • Hole drilling and ring coring methods
    • Diffraction methods
    • Optical methods
    • Indentation and diametral compression methods
    • Computational methods

The Learning Objectives for participants are to:

    • Define terminology pertinent to the residual stress in thermal spray coatings
    • Understand theory of residual stresses in thermal spray coatings
    • Understand practical methods of residual stress measurements
    • Understand the management of residual stress in coated components
    • Use the application of the standards
    • Collect data and prepare reports
    • Utilise methods, procedures and standards

    These will be achieved via:

    • Classroom
    • Demonstration
    • Practice notes

Material for this course is written by industry experts.
