About

Overview

This is the first and only Masterâ€™s Degree Program with this name in Turkey. The program has an interdisciplinary structure that aims to provide a basis for fruitful dialogue by building a bridge between humanities and social sciences through science and technology studies and almost all courses are in English. The aim of the program is to transform studentsknowledge and experience gained during education from an interdisciplinary perspective to an academic study by approaching science and technology studies from cultural, sociological, anthropological, ethical and philosophical perspectives.

Aim

This Masterâ€™s Degree Program was founded in 2016 as one of the programs of the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences of Istanbul Technical University. The program started to take students in the Fall semester of 2016-2017 Academic Year. Each course, except non-credits (Seminar), is 7,5 ECTS. Students are expected to complete 60 ECTS in courses as well as to fulfill the thesis writing criteria (60 ECTS) in one of the topics of STS within at most three years. They complete 120 ECTS in total. The programâ€™s language is English. It is the only Masterâ€™s Degree Program with this name in Turkiye. The program has Erasmus+ connections with Science Studiesâ€ Masterâ€™s Degree Program of Aarhus University, Denmark and Science and Technology Studiesâ€ Masterâ€™s Degree program of Munich Technical University, Germany, and "Techno-anthropology" Master's Degree program of Aalborg University, Denmark. Education in all programs are in English. Science, Technology and Societyâ€ Masterâ€™s degree Program builds a bridge between humanities and social sciences and science and technology studies by concentrating on historical, political, sociological, cultural, ethical and philosophical perspectives of science and technology.

Audience

The program has interdisciplinary character, therefore it is open to any four-year-university graduates from all fields.

GraduatesWorking Areas

Graduates work either in public institutions related to science and technology policies, or in ethical commissions regarding science and technology, or in science centers, or in the media. They may also continue their acamedic life in Ph.D. Programs.

To evaluate and critically analyze the norms directing social relations by using the knowledge and

To execute the teamwork in compliance with Science, Technology and Societyâ€™s interdisciplinary
structure
To collect, interpret and present the solution proposals regarding Science, Technology and Society by considering the societal, scientific, cultural and ethical values
To be aware of the continuity of the problems of Science, Technology and Society (Area Specific)
To communicate the current developments in Science, Technology and Society and oneâ€™s own work
orally, visually and in written forms, by supporting them with quantitative and qualitative data and to
present them to other groups in and out of the field in international arenas with competence, at
least, in one foreign language and required computer program

Requirements

Entry Requirements

Applicant’s official transcripts including all undergraduate and/or graduate level courses and their grades issued by the universities that the applicant graduated or will be graduated from.

Applicantwho will apply for PhD programs afterhis/her undergraduate degree has to have at least 3.0 Cumulative GPA out of 4.00 .
One of the Score Documents from Academic Personnel and Graduate Level Entrance Exam (ALES), GRE or GMAT including the related scores (ALES, GRE and GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.)

Applicants for Master's Programs are required to have Numerical score minimum 55 from ALES . Applicantswho will apply for PhD programs aftertheirundergraduate level degree arerequiredto have Numerical scoreminimum 80FROM ALES (ALES minimum score is not required for the Social Sciences Institute Music programs)

The minimum score required from Quantitative section of GRE is 610 (in the new system is minimum 149).

Applicants for Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences Programs can apply with GMAT certificate. GMATwitha minimum score of 450is required for these applicants.
One of the Documents of English Proficiency that is accepted according to ITU Senate principles.

TOEFL IBT/PBT,PTE, İTU English Proficiency Exam valid for 2 years.
ÜDS,KPDS,YDS, e-YDS test results are valid for 5 years . TOEFL ITP is not accepted.

English certificate is not mandatory in the Master applications.
The students admitted to any master program can complete their registration without an English certificate, but they cannot take courses until the submission of a valid English certificate. The applicants for a PhD program must deliver English certificate up to the registration period. If they do not submit a valid English certificate in the registration, they will not be registered.

ABOUT TOEFL IBT EXAM
Inaccordance with the decision taken at the meeting of ITU University Board of Directors dated 15.12.2011 and numbered 914 ; dating from the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year, IfTOEFL and IBT test results are from the testing centers in Turkey ,only the results from the exams conducted in the centers in state and private universities are accepted by ITU. TOEFL home edition can be used due to the pandemic.

For each applied program two recommendation letters are required.For MSc applications, oneof these recommendation letters is required to be prepared by an academic instructor who the student worked with. For PhD applications, one of the recommendation letters must be supplied from the supervisor that the candidatesare planning to study together during their doctorate education.
Reference letter is uploaded to the system by the person who is giving the reference, not by the candidate

Candidates whose application has been approved by the Registrar's Office cannot change their Appointment Dates and Application İnformation.
