    Secondary Computer Science with ICT

    About

Secondary teaching at Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

This teaching degree provides graduates with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to teach the ICT and Computer Science at secondary school level. Time is spent in the University in lectures and seminars and in the classroom on placements, ensuring that by the end of the course, trainees are confident professionals ready to begin teaching in secondary schools.

    Why choose this course?

The award is offered at two levels. Both are recognised teaching qualifications, but the postgraduate award will allow fast-track entry to Masters courses:

    • Professional Graduate Certificate in Education
    • Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

The choice of which qualification to take will be made while on the course, successful completion of which will lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The course aims to develop an understanding of ICT and computer science, the principles involved in the teaching and learning of the subject across the full age and ability range and the professional values and practice, subject knowledge and understanding commensurate with the particular subject specialism. This includes how children learn and how they develop cognitively, socially and physically and the understanding, skills and personal qualities necessary for managing the learning environment.

All trainees undertake a module concerned with the wider context of schools and education. This develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for your first teaching post in a secondary school. It also builds a foundation for further professional development. Elements of this module include both whole cohort keynote lectures and seminars, many of which are led by mixed groups of trainees supported by tutors. This allows you to meet the Teachers' Standards by making secure connections between issues in school and your own professional practice.

Find out more about teacher training routes at NTU at our Postgraduate Teacher Training Event on 2 November 2022.

ICT continues to be a rapidly expanding area in schools. The PGCE Information Communications Technology and Computer Science course will enable newly qualified teachers to teach ICT and Computer Science with confidence, inspiring and challenging pupils in the 11-18 age phase. The course will include education professional studies, subject application studies and school experience.

    What will I study?

    Subject teaching studies will include:

    • lesson planning and schemes of work
    • monitoring and assessment
    • special educational needs
    • philosophy of ICT in education
    • classroom management
    • Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Computer Science frameworks and specifications.

You will also cover managing ICT across the curriculum, including:

    • theory to practice
    • teaching
    • learning and pedagogy
    • resourcing and resources in ICT
    • Computer Science education
    • knowledge
    • skills
    • understanding.

You will also study the personal development of capability and health, safety and legal issues.

    • Module structure

This secondary Computer Science teaching degree is based around four modules which are core to all trainees. Despite this the course is designed to be flexible, allowing you to undertake some credit-bearing modules at either level 6 or masters level. You will have a significant amount of choice in identifying the focus of your study within modules in order to meet your own development needs and appropriate to the context of your professional practice placements.

Trainees on the courses will complete 120 credit-points full-time over a school academic year. This spreads their total study hours over a longer period that that of a university academic year. Additionally, the professional focus of the courses will mean that much learning will take place in schools.

The curriculum has been organised so that you will gain substantial support for the study of all modules at the start of the course through front-loaded University-based sessions, before your placements begin. The Learning and Teaching in the Subject module will largely be completed in this period, meaning that you will have clarity about academic expectations and your tutors will have an insight into required support. The other modules will be completed at different stages during the year to ensure both reasonable workload and to allow for the progressive impact of the Learning and Teaching in the Subject and Learning and Teaching in the Wider Context modules. This is underpinned by the Skills of Enquiry module which is assessed across these two modules. The Secondary Education Independent Study and Secondary Professional Practice modules which run right until the end of the courses.

Learning to be a teacher (60 credits)

This module aims to equip you with an understanding and experience of planning, setting high expectations and appropriate targets; monitoring and assessment; and teaching and behaviour management. It encourages critical reflection through personal development and evaluating professional and research-based resources, in order to develop your approach to teaching and learning.

    Learning to teach (20 credits)

This module will help you become a teacher who exercises responsibility: for your pupils as individuals and as members of groups within and beyond the school community. It also promotes productive interaction, with professional colleagues including teaching and support staff in school, staff from external agencies, and with other adults, including parents and carers.

    Learning to teach a subject 1 & 2 (2 x 20 credits)

Through these two related modules you will develop your understanding of the key concepts relating to education in your subject. You will reflect upon recent educational research and develop an understanding of what might be considered â€کbest practice' in schools. Each module encourages you to develop professional identity as a critically reflective teacher, able to interrogate professional practices and values. All four modules lay the foundation for your entry into the profession as an active contributor to the knowledge base of teaching and learning, enabling you to take responsibility for your continuing professional development.

    How to Apply

Step 1: Register as a new applicant and create an account

To get started, head to our Applicant Portal. Register yourself as a new applicant and create your user name and password . You don’t have to complete your application all at once – so keep your login details safe and log back in whenever you want.

Step 2: Fill out and submit your application

Work your way through the application making sure you:

    • include as much relevant information as possible
    • upload evidence of the results you have achieved
    • write a comprehensive personal statement that highlights your skills and explains your motivation for applying for the course in question
    • stick to the 4,000 word character limit – you can upload additional documents if you have more you need to say
    • if required, provide the reference(s) with your application.

When you submit your application, you'll receive an acknowledgement of receipt from us.

    Reference guidelines

You can submit your reference through the Applicant Portal, but make sure your referee:

    • types your reference on letter-headed paper
    • dates and signs the reference
    • clearly states their position and relationship to you.

Alternatively, your referee can email your reference to us at [email protected] – but it must come from their official email address. This means that it must be sent from a school, college, university or work email address.

It's your responsibility to request a reference from your referee and ensure that they, or you, submit it to us. We don't request references from referees on your behalf.

Step 3: Track the progress of your application

As long as you’ve provided all the information we need, we’ll try and make a decision on your application within five to ten working days. However, this can take longer and you should allow at least three weeks for a decision .

We’ll be updating you throughout this process though so make sure you add @ntu.ac.uk to your safe senders list and keep an eye on your emails. You can also track the progress of your application through the Applicant Portal.

Some courses will require that you attend an interview, or you may have to submit a portfolio of work. We'll contact you and give you plenty of warning if you need to do either of these things.

    Step 4: Check your offer

If your offer is accepted, congratulations! You'll have received either a conditional offer or an unconditional offer from us. It's important that you check this carefully.

    • Conditional offer: This means you must fulfil certain criteria – such as achieving the required grades – before you can be accepted on to the course.
    • Unconditional offer: You have met all the entry criteria and can take your place on the course as long as you accept your offer within four weeks .

If you've applied for more than one course you'll receive a separate decision for each course.

Step 5: Accept your offer within four weeks

We look forward to welcoming you – but remember that accepting your offer does not commit you to joining the course. Instead you'll have reserved your place as long as you meet any conditions – however we hope you do decide to join us.

Remember that competition for places is high, and if you don’t accept your offer within four weeks it may lapse. After eight weeks it will be automatically withdrawn.

Step 6: Meet the conditions of your offer (if you have any)

Upload all the documents required to meet the conditions of your offer using the My Documents section of the Applicant Portal. Make sure you keep your original copies too as we may need to see these to fully complete your enrolment and welcome you to the University.
