    Program details

    The Department of German and Slavic Studies offers programs of study leading to a Master of Arts degree in German Language and Literature, and Slavic Languages and Literatures, as well as a pre-master's option.

    Master of Arts in German or Slavic Studies

    Expected duration: 2 years

    The MA program consists of a combination of coursework and a thesis component.

    Tuition and fees: One year's tuition, then continuing fees in subsequent years (refer to Graduate tuition and fees)

    In addition to the minimum course requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, found in the Graduate Studies Regulations Section, students must complete a minimum number of 15 credit hours of coursework, including:

    • GRMN 7200/SLAV 7200 (3 credit hours)
    • GRMN 7210/SLAV 7210 (3 credit hours)
    • Three credit hours at the 7000 level in the student's major discipline
    • Six ancillary credit hours of 7000, 4000 and/or 3000 level courses in the student's major discipline, or in another program or department

    Pre-master's option

    Expected duration: 1 year

    The pre-master's program consists of 24 credit hours of coursework which includes a minimum of 12 credit hours in the major discipline (German or Slavic).

    Tuition and fees: Varies (refer to the pre-master's section in Graduate tuition and fees)

    Students without a four-year degree or without an undergraduate major in the discipline to be studied must complete a pre-master's year as approved by the chair of the appropriate graduate studies committee or their delegate before they can enter the master's program. This year is intended to bring the student's standing to approximately the level of a four-year degree with a major in the appropriate discipline.

    The Department of German and Slavic Studies has two graduate programs, one in German and one in Slavic Studies. As a German and Slavic studies student, you will explore in-depth the languages, cultures and literatures of Germany, Ukraine and Russia.

    For entrance into the Master's program:

    • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution;
    • A minimum grade of 70% in individual courses or B equivalent in the last two years of study, where a typical grade is:

    A+ 90-100% (Excellent)
    A 80-89% (Very good)
    B+ 75-79% (Good)
    B 70-74% (Good)
    C+ 65-69% (Acceptable)
    C 60-64% (Acceptable)
    D 50-59% (Poor)
    F 0-49% (Failure)

    For entrance into the PhD program:

    • Requirements listed above (see Master’s program) plus successful completion of a Master’s degree from a recognized institution.

    How to Apply

    The application is split into different sections and asks you for your personal information, post- secondary education, a list of recommenders and more.

    If you've already gathered required materials, the online application will take about 30 minutes to complete. For your security, you will be logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Make sure to save your progress before leaving your application. You can save and return to your application at any time using the login ID and password that you chose.

    Education history

    If you attended a college that is associated with a university, you should list the university in the education history. For example, if you attended Jawahar Engineering College, which is affiliated with Anna University, you should list Anna University in your education history.

    Making changes to your application

    If you haven’t submitted your application yet, you can change your email address by going to your Biographical Data page and selecting the "Change Email" link found under the Email Address section. If you have already submitted your application, go to your Student Portal, select your application, select application overview, scroll to the bottom and select "Change Email Address."

    Once you submit your application, you are no longer able to make changes. If you have made an error on your application, please email graduate.admissions@umanitoba.ca with your correction(s). Please include your name as it appears on your application and your applicant ID with your request.

    Submit your recommender information

    All letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to the university by the recommenders. You must formally request recommendations within the online application.

    After you enter your recommender’s name and email on the online application, they must complete the recommendation using our online system. We will not accept or upload paper copies of recommendation letters. Please be aware that helping or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.

    The referee process is a confidential process. All letters of recommendations are provided to the University of Manitoba in the strictest of confidence and will not be shared with the applicant. Participating in the drafting of your recommendation letter is discouraged. Helping write or submitting the recommendation letter on behalf of your recommender is considered fraud and will result in an unsuccessful application.
