About

If you want to become a more informed, aware individual who can be an advocate for action, consider the Social Justice Advocacy Certificate. Through this interdisciplinary program at the U, you will gain critical thinking skills and a social consciousness that can be used in a number of fields. The certificate curriculum contains classes from disciplines like social work, communication, and environmental studies, covering topics such as social diversity, urban politics, immigration, and organizational communication. The culminating experience of the program is a capstone course in social justice advocacy skills and techniques, synthesizing key themes from the students advocacy studies. Regardless of the career you pursue, this certificate will prepare you to be an advocate for those who might be marginalized, tokenized, or otherwise silenced.

*New Admissions Criteria: The University of Utah is Test Optional for freshman applications for Fall 2022 admission. ACT/SAT scores are not required for admission, merit scholarships (including department scholarships), or direct admission programs (including Engineering). Freshman applications to the University of Utah for Fall 2022 will be evaluated using a holistic review process that takes into consideration factors such as a student’s high school GPA, course rigor, etc. To find out more click here.

Students admitted prior to high school graduation must complete their senior year satisfactorily and have a final high school transcript sent for review. Likelihood of admission may also depend on the quality of the applicant pool and University enrollment goals.

If you do not meet the above requirements, it is likely you will not be admitted. Consider attending another regionally accredited college or university and reapply after you have 30 semester or 45 quarter transferable credits with at least a 2.6 GPA.

Some applicants not meeting the admission standards may be considered for admission on an exception basis if their special talents or diversity enhances the institution's life and character.

Career

Students who want to get involved on campus can join clubs like the International Justice Mission or the Health and Human Rights Interest Group. Upon completion of the program, use your advocacy skills in tandem with those from your major: business students might consider becoming HR or training specialists, while education and social work majors will benefit from increased social awareness as they work with underserved populations. Students who wish to become lawyers, mediators, or politicians will also benefit from a knowledge of social justice advocacy.

How to Apply

Apply for admission by submitting the Common Application. Be sure to fill out the application completely, as it will be used to determine admissibility. Once an application has been started, you will be able to save and continue at any time until submitted. After you have submitted your application, changes cannot be made. Required Documents

- Transcripts (mark sheets, school records, grades) for secondary school (9-12). Official English translations must be provided if the transcripts are only in the native language.

- We require official transcripts. We will however accept unofficial copies of transcripts for any schools outside of the U.S. to complete your application. Please note that we will require official copies of your transcripts should you be admitted. Unofficial transcripts can be sent to us directly at [email protected].

- Before starting classes at the University of Utah, students must submit an official copy of their secondary school transcript and proof of graduation directly to the Office of Admissions.

- If you have taken the GED exam in place of a high school diploma, please have your official GED scores sent directly from the GED website.

- Official printed transcripts can be dropped off in a closed envelope sealed with adhesive at the International Admissions service window in the Student Services Building (SSB) or mailed to:
