Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages around the world both in terms of the numbers of speakers, and the global geographical spread. On this degree you will be absorbed into the everyday use of foreign languages as our multi-cultural community includes academics from all over the world, British, exchange and international students, and foreign language assistants. Linguistics is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages evolve, are structured and what they have in common. It also studies

Course information

This course places language learning within the wider context of Spanish studies including culture, society, literature, film and history. The language modules emphasise communicating effectively and developing transferable skills such as translating, interpreting and interview techniques, with practical language classes embracing speaking, listening, reading and writing. The Linguistics modules teach you about sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), forensic linguistics, and phonetics and phonology. You will also learn about language use and variation in different social contexts, the media, and intercultural settings. Communicating effectively, critical thinking and developing rigorous analytical skills are all valuable abilities when you enter the world of work.

A level Spanish at Grade C or above, or accepted equivalent, is required for all applicants. Applicants without A level Spanish should contact the University to discuss options.

Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma – DMM

Pass Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 106 UCAS Tariff points

T Levels - We welcome applications from students undertaking T Level qualifications. Eligible applicants will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of Merit as a condition of offer.

Equivalent qualifications and combinations will be considered, including Extended Project when achieved at Grade C or above

AS levels (or qualifications equivalent to AS level) are not accepted.

International Baccalaureate points

IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall, or 104-112 UCAS Tariff points from Higher Level, and including minimum HL 6 in Spanish. If you plan to meet the Level 2 course requirements through your IB Diploma you will need to achieve Higher Level 4 or Standard Level 5 in English

As a global language, Spanish is second only to Mandarin in terms of the number of the world's population who speak it as a first language. Spanish has also emerged as the most important language for the UK in an analysis made by The British Council. This has led to Spanish graduates not only entering the popular routes of language teaching and interpreting/translation, but also fields such as international relations, international trade, intercultural consultancy, and global communication firms.

As a graduate in the digital era, linguistics expertise has become of even greater importance. Your linguistics knowledge will present opportunities to enter a broad range of employment. Graduates could opt for the popular routes of publishing, public relations, and marketing. Alternatively, linguistics graduates could use their skills and experience in fields such as education, telecommunications, or global consultancy.

There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study on our MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms one in English language and one in TESOL.
