    Proficiency in modern languages could help you to gain a competitive edge in the global jobs market. In both the private and public sectors there is demand for professionals with strong language skills who can work in culturally diverse environments.

    Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages around the world both in terms of the numbers of speakers, and the global geographical spread. On this degree you will be absorbed into the everyday use of foreign languages as our multi-cultural community includes academics from all over the world, British, exchange and international students, and foreign language assistants. Knowledge and expertise across Interpreting and Translation gives you the skills and tools to make a difference in an increasingly globalised world.

    Course information

    This course places language learning within the wider context of Spanish studies including culture, society, literature, film and history. The language modules emphasise communicating effectively and developing transferable skills such as translating, interpreting and interview techniques, with practical language classes embracing speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will be taught by research experts, dedicated to interpreting and translation in your chosen subject.

    UCAS tariff points

    A level Spanish at Grade C or above, or accepted equivalent, is required for all applicants. Applicants without A level Spanish should contact the University to discuss options.

    GCE A levels - grades BCC or equivalent

    Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade DMM

    Access to HE Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum 106 UCAS Tariff points

    UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma - grade of Merit overall

    OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - grade DMM

    T level - We welcome applications from students undertaking T level qualifications. Eligible applicants will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of Merit as a condition of offer

    IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 26 or minimum 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects

    Other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to GCE A level are also considered.

    A maximum of three A level-equivalent qualifications will be accepted towards meeting the UCAS tariff requirement.

    AS levels, or qualifications equivalent to AS level, are not accepted. The Extended Project qualification (EPQ) may be accepted towards entry, in conjunction with two A-level equivalent qualifications.

    International Baccalaureate points

    IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall, or 104-112 UCAS Tariff points from Higher Level, and including minimum HL 6 in Spanish. If you plan to meet the Level 2 course requirements through your IB Diploma you will need to achieve Higher Level 4 or Standard Level 5 in English

    A language and interpreting/translation focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs. Teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways, but languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the UK and abroad.

    Spanish can open graduate employment opportunities across a broad range of disciplines and sectors. As a global language, Spanish is second only to Mandarin in terms of the number of the world's population who speak it as a first language. Spanish has also emerged as the most important language for the UK in an analysis made by the British Council. This has led to Spanish graduates not only entering the popular routes of language teaching and interpreting/translation, but also fields such as international relations, international trade, intercultural consultancy, and global communication firms.

    Translation and interpreting is a rewarding, varied, and fascinating career. Graduates can find employment across a range of professions, including field such as Law, Business, Health, and the Media. Completing this degree will also give you in-depth knowledge in your chosen language, meaning career prospects are also widely available across public and private sectors such as education, international trade, business management, and international relations.

    There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study on our MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms one in English Language and one in TESOL.
