Structural Chemistry and Spectroscopy MSc

    About

The Structural Chemistry and Spectroscopy programme is an international degree course taught in English. It is research-oriented, introduces advanced spectroscopic methods, and centres around the structure of chemical and biochemical molecules, especially biopolymers.

The focus is on the synthesis and structure elucidation of complex structures. The aim is to enable students to think and work independently as scientists and to successfully solve problems in various scientific and technical fields. Graduates are increasingly required to assume important interdisciplinary functions in all areas of industry, business, state and society.

The programme focuses on equipping students with the necessary competences for systematically overcoming typical problems in translation and intercultural technical communication, in accordance with the EMT competence framework drawn up by the EU Commission, Directorate-General for Translation: language competence intercultural competence research competence thematic competence technical competence service provision competence. Therefore, the programme not only includes practical exercises for translating technical texts in both directions, but also mandatory courses on theoretical and practical topics such as: scholarly work, linguistics, translation studies, translation as intercultural communication, terminology and terminography, project and translation management, translation tools, documentation and translation quality, labour market and prices. In addition, compulsory elective courses include modules on interpreting studies, rhetoric, consecutive interpreting, note-taking for consecutive interpreting, German-Arabic legal terminology and matters involving Islamic law.

The main objective of the programme is the ability to work efficiently and independently at the forefront of chemical research. The masters programme attaches just as much importance to a further deepening of specialist knowledge as it does to introducing students to the practical side of innovative work in science
    • as well as to solving problems when faced with the most challenging questions in modern technology and business.

One highly valued professional quality of chemists is their ability to systematically analyse and further develop complex scientific and technical processes from a material perspective. Because of these basic skills
    • chemistry graduates are also sought after in professional fields that are otherwise reserved for others
