    Proficiency in modern languages can help you to gain a competitive edge in the global jobs market. In both the private and public sectors there is demand for professionals with strong language skills who can work in culturally diverse environments.

    More than 75 million people speak French as their native language. French is also one of the official languages in Canada, Belgium, and Switzerland and is spoken widely across the North African countries of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. On this degree you will be absorbed into the everyday use of foreign languages as our multi-cultural community includes academics from all over the world, British, exchange and international students, and foreign language assistants.     Course information

    This course places language learning within the wider context of French studies including culture, society, literature, film and history. The language modules emphasise communicating effectively and developing transferable skills such as translating, interpreting and interview techniques, with practical language classes embracing speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our TESOL modules aim to improve your fluency and accuracy in other languages, gaining experience of how to help learners of all abilities to become fluent English speakers. You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced practitioners who have taught across the world, and they bring this experience directly into the classroom.

    UCAS tariff points

    GCE A levels - grades BCC or equivalent including C in French if studied at A Level or equivalent

    Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade DMM

    Access to HE Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum 106 UCAS Tariff points

    UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma - grade of Merit overall

    OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - grade DMM

    T level - We welcome applications from students undertaking T level qualifications. Eligible applicants will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of Merit as a condition of offer

    IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 26 or minimum 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects

    Other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to GCE A level are also considered.

    A maximum of three A level-equivalent qualifications will be accepted towards meeting the UCAS tariff requirement.

    AS levels, or qualifications equivalent to AS level, are not accepted. The Extended Project qualification (EPQ) may be accepted towards entry, in conjunction with two A-level equivalent qualifications.

    IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall or 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects. If you plan to meet the Level 2 course requirements through your IB Diploma you will need to achieve Higher Level 4 or Standard Level 5 in English

    Career prospects

    A language and TESOL focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs. Teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways, but languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the UK and abroad.

    Being a French speaker can open graduate employment opportunities at many organisations, the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the OECD, the African Union, the Council of Europe, the European Union, NATO, or the International Olympic Committee, to name a few. There are also many international businesses who seek graduates with French language skills, such as in consulting (e.g. CapGemini), finance (e.g. Société Générale, BNP Paribas, Banque de France) and in wider industrial sectors (e.g. Edf, Airbus, Alstom).

    Employability in TESOL offers a broad range of career paths. Graduates can opt to focus on teaching, working in a range of educational contexts teaching English to a diverse mix of learners of different ages and cultures. Opportunities are also prevalent in areas such as materials development, syllabus design, online learning, language testing, exam invigilation, and educational management.

    There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study on our MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms one in English language and one in TESOL.
