In both the private and public sectors, there is demand for professionals with strong language skills who can work in culturally diverse environments. If you are interested in the way in which we communicate and how it can influence people, studying linguistics and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) will help you unravel how language is inextricably linked to who we are.

Linguistics is devoted to the scientific study of natural language and concerned with how languages evolve, are structured and what they have in common. It also studies how languages are acquired and used. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a practical branch of applied linguistics and our focus is on helping you put the skills you learn to practical use in the world of work. O

Course information

Our TESOL modules aim to improve your fluency and accuracy in other languages, gaining experience of how to help learners of all abilities to become fluent English speakers. They are taught by highly qualified and experienced practitioners who have taught across the world, and they bring this experience directly into the classroom. Our linguistics modules enable you to develop a sound knowledge of both theoretical and applied perspectives and places emphasis on English, with examples from other languages where appropriate. The core elements of the course teach you about sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), forensic linguistics, and phonetics and phonology. You will also learn about language use and variation in different social contexts, the media, and intercultural settings. Communicating effectively, critical thinking and developing rigorous analytical skills are all valuable abilities for when you enter the world of work.

GCE A levels - grades BCC or equivalent

Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade DMM

Access to HE Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum 106 UCAS Tariff points

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma - grade of Merit overall

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - grade DMM

T level - We welcome applications from students undertaking T level qualifications. Eligible applicants will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of Merit as a condition of offer

IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 26 or minimum 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects

Other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to GCE A level are also considered.

A maximum of three A level-equivalent qualifications will be accepted towards meeting the UCAS tariff requirement.

AS levels, or qualifications equivalent to AS level, are not accepted. The Extended Project qualification (EPQ) may be accepted towards entry, in conjunction with two A-level equivalent qualifications.

International Baccalaureate points

IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall or 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects. If you plan to meet the Level 2 course requirements through your IB Diploma you will need to achieve Higher Level 4 or Standard Level 5 in English

Employability in TESOL offers a broad range of career paths. Graduates can opt to focus on teaching, working in range of educational contexts teaching English to a diverse mix of learners of different ages and cultures. Opportunities are also prevalent in areas such as materials development, syllabus design, online learning, language testing, exam invigilation, and educational management.
As a graduate in the digital era, Linguistics expertise has become of even greater importance. Your linguistics knowledge will present opportunities to enter a broad range of employment. Graduates could opt for the popular routes of publishing, public relations, and marketing. Alternatively, linguistics graduates could use their skills and experience in fields such as education, telecommunications, or global consultancy.

There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study on our MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms one in English language and one in TESOL.
