Summary
Sustainability has been the forefront in tribological system design and optimisation for many decades, supporting the energy efficiency of many transport systems and machine elements where friction and wear are primarily concerned. The growing demand for sustanable materials in engineering systems and the need to reduce the environment impact for both surfaces and lubricants have been pushing the boundaries of the tribological system design challenges. Choices eco-friendly and reusable materials and lubricants, as well as the role of coatings, will ultimately contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint of the whole life cycle of the tribological system. This project will focus on the development and tribological assessment of light weight materials surface engineering that will contribute to many sectors such as sustainable transport systems.
