About

A concentration in real estate development provides a focused course of study for Master of Architecture and/or Master of Urban Planning students who wish to pursue careers in real estate development in combination with professional architectural practice or work with a private or public developer. Related Certificates Certificate in Geographic Information Systems Overview The Urban Planning program at UWM is a professional, skills-oriented, master's program designed to train students to perform a variety of planning-related jobs in either the public or private sector. The program focuses on planning as a process for improving collective decisions in the public and private sectors. The planning process includes analyzing problems, designing alternative solutions and evaluating their consequences, developing strategies for action and participating in their implementation. This process is used in both government and business in developing policy for future action, so that today's solutions do not become tomorrow's problems. The program's elective courses combined with other courses on campus enable the development of more specialized depth in several planning related areas under the following concentrations: Urban Revitalization; Economic Development; Urban Geographic Information Systems; Transportation; Physical Planning and Urban Design; and Environmental Resources. The Department is staffed by faculty members who combine academic and professional qualifications and who are committed to active involvement in current issues. They teach by example, using case studies and projects involving actual situations in most courses. This approach injects reality into the educational environment, allows students to see the relevance of the material in the curriculum, and shows students how their courses relate to their professional practice. The Milwaukee Metropolitan area of one-and-one-half million persons is a learning laboratory that classroom projects and faculty researchers use extensively. Moreover, students gain additional practical experience through internships in the wide array of planning positions available in the Milwaukee area. MArch/MUP Coordinated Degree Program In cooperation with the Department of Architecture, the Department of Urban Planning offers a Master of Architecture/Master of Urban Planning program to prepare students for positions as architect/planners. Students in the program concurrently pursue a Master of Architecture degree program and a Master of Urban Planning degree program. Prerequisite to the award of either degree in this program is the simultaneous award of its counterpart degree. For more detailed information on this program see Credits and Courses section below. MS/MUP Coordinated Degree Program In cooperation with the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Urban Planning offers a Master of Science in Engineering/Master of Urban Planning program to prepare students for positions in transportation, public works or similar areas. Students in the program will concurrently pursue a Master of Urban Planning degree program in the Department of Urban Planning and a Master of Science in Engineering degree program from the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Prerequisite to the award of either degree in this program is the simultaneous award of its counterpart degree. MPA/MUP Coordinated Degree Program A joint degree program has been designed to allow students to obtain both the Master of Public Administration and the Master of Urban Planning degrees concurrently. This program is intended to combine professional training in planning with applied administrative and managerial skills. More detailed information on this program can be found later in this section and in the Public Administration section of this Bulletin.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

GPA of at least 3.0 during the last two years of the baccalaureate program (calculated on a minimum of 48 credits).
Completion of six or more credits of program-approved post-baccalaureate courses. These courses must be at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, taken with the last five years with a grade of B or better (B- not acceptable).
Submission of official score reports from the Graduate Record Examination, the Graduate Management Admission Test, or the Miller Analogies Test that indicate competencies in areas related to the proposed graduate program. To be considered official, these scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to UWM, and must be received prior to admission.
Scores on tests developed by the proposed graduate program that demonstrate potential for success in that program. These scores must be submitted prior to admission.
Evidence of professional certification or licensure in a relevant area as determined by the proposed program and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Education.
A graduate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA

English Program Requirements

A baccalaureate or higher degree awarded by UWM or another accredited institution where English is the language of instruction—as determined by the Center for International Education (CIE). Applicants whose native language is not English also must also have done both of the following:
1. Attended this institution for at least one year.
2. Received the degree within the previous two years of the application date OR lived and worked in the U.S. continuously since receiving the degree.
Official TOEFL** (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results with a minimum required score of 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) and a minimum recommended sub-score of 18 in each skill).
Official IELTS** (International English Language Testing System) results with a minimum required score of 6.5, with a minimum recommended sub-score of 6.0 in each skill.
Official CAE** (Cambridge English: Advanced, aka Certificate of Advanced English) or CPE** (Cambridge English: Proficiency, aka Certificate of Proficiency in English) results with a minimum required level of C1 and a minimum recommended score of 170 on any given language skill test.
Official scores from another test deemed by UWM to be reliably equivalent to a C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). Procedures for determining CEFR equivalents are outlined in Appendix A.

Reasons for Graduate Study Statement

In your Panthera application, submit a statement that gives your reasons for graduate study. The statement is used to determine the appropriateness of UWM’s programs to your educational and professional goals and serves as an example of your ability to express yourself in writing. The following are required criteria for the statement:

Explain your reasons for pursuing graduate study.
Describe specific interests and your background in the field.
List any relevant skills or training you have acquired.
List relevant academic awards or honors you have received.
If your program requires recommendations, list the names of those individuals who will write on your behalf.

Evidence of English Proficiency

Provide proof of English proficiency in one of the following ways:

A TOEFL IBT, Academic IELTS, or CAE/CPE score that meets the requirement for admission; or,
A bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) or higher degree from UWM, or another approved institution where English is the sole language of instruction. The following criteria must also be met:
1. you must have attended this institution for at least 1 year; and,
2. your degree was received within two years of your application to UWM or your degree was not received within two years of your application to UWM but you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S. since receiving your degree.
3. Please note-TOEFL scores must be sent via ETS to code 1473. This code is the same for both undergraduate and graduate study.

Official Transcript(s) and Degree Certificate(s) from Post-Secondary Institution(s)
