About
*Please Note: Face-to-face/in-person instruction of this program is available ONLY at the main campus in Tallahassee, FL. This program is NOT available via Online/Distance Learning.*
The Visual Disabilities Education BS/MS pathway will prepare you to work with individuals who are blind or have low vision. Visual Disability teachers are employed in a variety of settings, such as a resource room or as an itinerant teacher in a public school, at a school for the blind, or at an agency serving children who have visual impairments. Most graduates find immediate employment in this field and lead satisfying professional lives facilitating the development of skills of children and adults with visual impairments.
Combined BS/MS Degree Pathway
The Visual Disabilities Education program is a combined BS/MS degree pathway. The BS/MS pathway requires two years of upper-division undergraduate coursework plus one additional year of graduate coursework. Admission to the graduate portion of the combined degree pathway requires a 3.00 upper-division undergraduate GPA.
Upon completion of the undergraduate program you will earn a bachelor’s degree in Visual Disabilities Education. Your bachelor's degree will be awarded at the end of the Spring semester of your senior year. Upon completion of the graduate program you will earn a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a major in Visual Disabilities.
Professional Educator’s Certificate
Upon awarding of the Master’s degree you will have satisfied all the requirements for a state-approved teacher preparation program in Florida. You will be eligible for a Florida Professional Educator’s Certificate in Visual Impairment (K - 12).

Applicants whose educational history has not followed a curriculum patterned after the U.S. educational system are encouraged to submit their academic records to a foreign-credential-evaluation agency for a secondary-school evaluation to include a grade-point-average calculation.
- If your school follows a U.S. patterned curriculum, you will be asked to complete the Self-reported Student Academic Record (SSAR). To learn more about the SSAR, view our FAQ.
- If your school follows an exam-based curriculum, you will be asked to submit official or certified copies of your exam results.
- All other applicants should submit official or certified copies of all secondary-school records and secondary-school evaluation. All credentials from non-U.S. institutions must be evaluated before the application deadline by a foreign-credential-evaluation agency to include a U.S. equivalent grade point average. We recommend a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. All academic records should be issued in the native language and be accompanied by a certified English translation.
Certified Copy of Required Academic Records
- All transcripts/academic records that are not in English must be accompanied by certified English translations.
- To be considered "certified," documents should be true copies that are signed and dated by an educational official familiar with academic records. Any translated record should be literal and not an interpretive translation. Documents signed by a notary or other public official with no educational affiliation will not be accepted.
- If the transcript/academic record does not indicate the degree earned and date the degree was awarded, separate proof of degree is required.
Applicants whose native language is not English should self-report English proficiency exam results.
