Workplace Health and Well-being

This 20 credit Workplace Health and Well Being module is offered at two levels - level 6 (UZVSJL-20-3) or level 7 (UZVSJM-20-M).

Delivered by expert practitioners and using an evidence based approach, the aim of the module \is to provide an overview of and explore contemporary issues in workplace health and wellbeing.

The syllabus and learning outcomes reflect the breadth and depth in this area of practice and aims to address current public health priorities, while also recognises the views and wishes of service users.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will able to demonstrate the following:

Knowledge and understanding 

• Theoretical frameworks for workplace health and wellbeing programmes
• Organisational structure and management styles and their effect on employee health and wellbeing
• Assessment of organisational health and wellbeing
• Theoretical frameworks for absence management and the management of employees with long term health conditions, 
• The workplace as a setting for health promotion and the evidence base for the effectiveness of workplace health promotion programmes and health interventions
• Theories of organisational change, employee engagement, the psychological contract and the effect on health and wellbeing
• Current Health and Safety and Employment Law and their application in organisations
• Leadership and influencing organisational health and wellbeing programmes and interventions
• The role of Occupational Health services within the public health, employment and the  economic workplace health and wellbeing agendae

Intellectual skills 

• Analyse the effect of work on health, using an evidence-based approach, taking account of organisational factors and individual need.
• Outline the economic, public health agendas and theoretical frameworks related to workplace health and wellbeing and health promotion
• Discuss the changing nature of work and workforce demographics and the effect of work on physical health and mental wellbeing
• Describe organisational structures and analyse the effect of organisational change and employee engagement on health and wellbeing
• Evaluate the evidence base for the management of employees with long term health conditions, absence management, workplace health promotion and health interventions
• Analyse and discuss the application of Employment, Equality and Health and Safety Legislation
• Perform a workplace health needs assessment and evaluate the results to influence organisational policy in relation to employee health and wellbeing
• Debate the contribution of Work and Wellbeing practitioners including Occupational Health Nurses to the public health agenda within organisations including collaborative methods of working in order to assess and effectively manage workplace health and wellbeing.
• Analyse the contribution of Workplace Health and Wellbeing practitioners including Occupational Health Nurses to the public health, employment and economic agenda.

Subject, Professional and Practice Skills 

• Be able to carry out an organisational health and wellbeing needs assessment and present the findings in order to influence organisational  health and wellbeing policy and practices
• Be able to make a business case for the implementation of interventions to promote and improve employee and community health and wellbeing and prevent employee and community ill health, accidents and injury. 
• Interpret and apply relevant legislation and approved codes of practice with regard to the workplace environment, including consideration for the well-being and protection of those in the wider community.
• Experience collaborative and partnership working to achieve organisational health and wellbeing aims.

Transferable skills

• Demonstrate effective communication with clients, colleagues, partners and collaborators
• Critically reflect on own learning and practice.

Entry requirements

The module forms part of the overall Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) Programme and is compulsory for Occupational Health Nursing students. However, due to the wide-ranging and practical content, it is open to and will be of interest to anyone with an interest in health and wellbeing at work, particularly Occupational Health, Public Health, Human Resources and Health and Safety professionals.

Holders of the Community College Diploma (2/3 years) with an overall GPA of 2.7 out of 4 will be considered for undergraduate entry.
