    About

    This course is for those seeking a career supporting learners across the sectors in educational settings such as mainstream schools, resource provision units, special schools, post-compulsory provision or within the local authority support services.

    The interdisciplinary approach includes the sociological, historical, psychological, philosophical and contemporary aspects of education relating to the diverse range and nature of ALN/SEND and the processes through which learners may secure their educational entitlement.

    You'll develop knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, delivery and evaluation of a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that meets the needs of learners with ALN/SEND.

    The course:

    • provides the opportunity to develop the specialist knowledge, skills and work experience needed to go straight into the workplace or teaching via a Primary Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or Post-compulsory qualification (PcET)
    • opens up additional employment opportunities in informal education settings or progression to further study
    • combines taught modules and placement experiences in a range of settings
    • enables you to interrelate the policy, theory and practice of learning and teaching for a range of learners and a range of ALN/SEND including communication and interaction needs and SpLD/Dyslexia
    • includes a foundation year, giving you the broad knowledge base and academic skills you'll need to succeed during the rest of your degree

    YEAR 1 (FOUNDATION YEAR)

    The Education foundation year will introduce you to the theories of Child Development and how they can be applied and evidenced in practice. You will be given an overview of the concept of health and wellbeing in the early years and the importance of providing a healthy, safe and secure environment for children. You will gain a theoretical and experiential basis of the necessary skills to work with children, young people and families.

    YEAR 2 (LEVEL 4)

    The second-year offers students a broad understanding of some of the main issues involving work with children, young people and families. This is a core year studied by all Education students to ensure the subject foundations, key study skills and preparation for placement are all in place.

    YEAR 3 (LEVEL 5)

    This year builds upon the core skills gained at level 4 and introduces a specialist module specific to your study route and an optional module to choose from. A key part of level 5 is the introduction to research skills and an extended placement.

    YEAR 4 (LEVEL 6)

    The final year builds upon prior learning, requires more independent study and involves students completing a research project. This year you will study two specialist modules and develop your leadership skills.

    For entry onto an Undergraduate programme, applicants require:

    Community college diploma with 65% minimum

    Or, holders of a a Tawjihi 65%+ average plus a recognised foundation programme

    Or, holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 27 points or more will be considered for direct admission to Bachelor degree courses

    If you are an international student who requires a Student visa, your application should be made via Centurus. You will need to fill in your details, upload any documents relevant to your application and confirm your student declaration.

    If you are applying for a research degree, such as MPhil or PhD, you should click here.

    The documents that need to be uploaded are:

    • A scanned copy of your passport (including personal details page).
    • Certificates and transcripts showing your academic progression so far.
    • Certified translations of overseas certificates and transcripts where the document is not in English or Welsh.
    • An acceptable English language certificate.
    • Copy of Tuberculosis screening if you are a resident in any of the countries listed. More information about Tuberculosis screening can be found here.
    • 1 academic reference letter (further references might be required).
    • Evidence of finances to pay first year’s full tuition fee and to cover UKVI maintenance requirements.
    • Evidence of work experience (where relevant).

    If you have previously studied in the UK, you are also required to provide the extra documents listed below:

    • A scanned copy of the passport page showing entry clearance in to the UK and return overseas.
    • Copies of any UK visas you have previously held.
    • Copies of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) documents / visa letters for all previous studies undertaken in the UK.
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS refusal letters (if applicable).
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS appeal or administrative review letters (if applicable).
    • Evidence of any removal / deportation / detention notices (if applicable).
