The philosophy of the MSc in Advanced Practice (Midwifery) programme is based on a humanistic perspective and utilises an andragogical approach in teaching for understanding which is appropriate for midwives undertaking this programme. The advanced practitioner of midwifery combines scientific knowledge and understanding with a sensitivity to the individual needs of women and their families. Advanced practitioners are a strong voice for the profession, the evidence reveals they improve practice and lead out on innovation particularly the development of key services for women and their families.

The aims of the MSc in Advanced Practice (Midwifery) programmes are to enable experienced registered midwives to develop an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills, and clinical competencies for an expanded autonomous scope of practice  in maternity care settings including the community.   The programme is designed to enhance the student's autonomous practice, who are clinically competent and skilled in the delivery of high-quality direct care.
