    About

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme to complement your main specialism. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. A higher degree of specialisation then develops in subsequent years. For more information about our teaching methods at Lancaster please visit our Teaching and Learning section.

The following courses do not offer modules outside of the subject area due to the structured nature of the programmes: Architecture, Law, Physics, Engineering, Medicine, Sports and Exercise Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedicine and Biomedical Science.

Information contained on the website with respect to modules is correct at the time of publication, and the University will make every reasonable effort to offer modules as advertised. In some cases changes may be necessary and may result in some combinations being unavailable, for example as a result of student feedback, timetabling, Professional Statutory and Regulatory Bodies' (PSRB) requirements, staff changes and new research.

    English Program Requirements

For majority of our undergraduate courses you must meet our standard English language requirements, but there are a few courses which have different requirements.

The requirements for Medicine and Surgery vary significantly from our standard requirements and you can find more details on this page.

Some of our Science, Mathematics and Social Work courses also have different English language requirements. The English language requirements for these can be found on the entry requirements tab in the course information.

    Career

Throughout your degree, you will have the opportunity to gain skills and experience that will prepare you for a successful career. Opportunities include:

    • Provision of designated practice experience for each student
    • Live project work
    • Field Trips
    • Digital skills for future practice
    • Work placement

This degree will prepare you for a career in a range of interesting and fulfilling professional roles. Many Architecture students progress to postgraduate study in order to continue the route to becoming a fully qualified Architect, however you may also be interested in other related jobs and professional careers that are open to those who have completed part 1. These include:

    • Architectural Technician/Assistant
    • Architectural Visualisation
    • Landscape Architecture
    • Interior Architect / Spatial Design
    • Urban Designer
    • Property development
    • Project and construction management

    Professional Accreditation

There are three main routes to registration for professional accreditation, but typically, if you are studying in the UK, you will:

    • take a three-year full time first degree in architecture (often referred to as ‘Part 1’)
    • followed by a year of appropriate professional experience
    • then a two-year full time second degree or diploma in architecture (often referred to as ‘Part 2’)
    • followed by a further year of professional experience
    • then the Professional Practice Examination – or Part 3

You will need to have all three qualifications in order to apply for registration together with a minimum of 24 months appropriate practical training experience. This information is taken from: http://students.arb.org.uk

The programme is accredited by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and, as this is a new programme, has been awarded candidate course status by the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA), which means the course has been judged to have the potential to meet RIBA criteria. The status will be reviewed in 2023 when the first students graduate.
