    Art History

    About

    The Honors Tutorial College (HTC) program in art history balances a commitment to breadth and rigor with an opportunity for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to explore current and fundamental issues creatively. In this four-year program, the student is expected to take one tutorial course each semester, language courses, collateral studies, and upper-division art history courses. This enables the student to acquire the full range of skills necessary to successfully continue in graduate study. Students will have excellent opportunities for intensive study with the art historians in the School of Art + Design. Students will also have the opportunity during the sophomore or junior year to apply for the Museum Studies Certificate Program offered through the College of Fine Arts.

    Students will receive a degree of Bachelor of Arts from the Honors Tutorial College. To earn a bachelor's degree in the Honors Tutorial College, a student must fulfill all the academic requirements of the program of study, maintain a 3.5 GPA (grade point average) in the courses that are required by the program of study, and have at least a 3.5 overall GPA.

    Tutorials/Courses/Thesis

    Tutorials for the first year are based on the art history survey classes AH 2110 and AH 2130. HTC Art History students will cover the material in those courses in addition to exploring themes and issues in the visual arts that reflect their specific interests. The second and third year tutorials are based on the student's individual interests and should be designed with the idea of working towards the HTC thesis. The tutorial during the spring year of the junior year should be done with the thesis advisor and should be geared towards putting together a proposal and a bibliography for the thesis. The final year is devoted to the thesis project, with the student working closely with her or his thesis advisor and DOS.

    Entry Requirements

    Freshmen will be admitted to the College on a selective basis. Normally, you will need to be in the top 20 percent of your high school class, with a strong college preparatory curriculum. You are expected to have above-average GPA (3.0 or better) and also have demonstrated leadership potential through participation in extracurricular activities or work experience. Members of groups that are historically underrepresented in business will receive special consideration.

    English Program Requirements

    • Provide a recent TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test score. See minimum requirements below. IELTS reports should be sent directly from the testing agency. TOEFL results should be sent electronically directly from the testing agency (school code 1593). Duolingo English Test results can be shared online with Ohio University once your test has been certified.

      IELTS: 6.0 (no sub-score below 5.5)

    • Complete at least three years in a high school in an English-speaking system, including three years of high school English (not ESL) courses with a grade of B or better.

    • Submit an ACT composite score of 21 with 21 ACT English and 21 ACT Reading subscores.

    • Submit a 1060 SAT Total with 540 SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing subscore.

    • Have completed the equivalent of Ohio University's English 1510: Writing and Rhetoric I (Freshman Composition) with a grade of C or better. Course equivalency will be determined during the application process.

    Career

    Graduates of the HTC program in art history will be well prepared for graduate study. Following completion of the B.A., they will have the academic background necessary to enter rigorous M.A. degree programs in museum studies, art history, and art management. The Ph.D. is the terminal degree in art history.

    • Evidence of sufficient funding to support your educational and living expenses for a 9-month period. Learn more about the necessary amount on our Costs & Aid page. Your financial documentation must include:
      • A letter from your sponsor confirming the amount of funding that will be provided and stating your relationship to the sponsor (a PDF sample sponsor form is available but not required) and a letter or statement from your sponsor's bank confirming that the funding is available in an accessible account. The name on the bank document must match the sponsor letter and must be written in English.
      • If you will receive a government or other external scholarship, please provide proof of nomination of the award with your application packet.
    • Optional materials can be submitted to Undergraduate Admissions via postal mail or by emailing [email protected]. Optional materials may include:
      • Standardized test scores, if applicable. Ohio University has adopted a test-optional pathway for freshman applicants to the Athens campus. If you choose to submit standardized test scores, they must be submitted directly from the testing agency: SAT (school code 1593) or ACT (school code 3314). Ohio University considers the Evidenced-based Reading and Writing scores from the SAT.
