About
The course is based on distinct themes in each year. Year one is the foundation period of study during which students are brought up to a common standard in relation to a number of subject areas which will underpin future studies in events, in terms of both contextual material and analytical and presentation ability and development of personal and professional skills associated with employment in the industry. Students will be exposed to a range of events and the inner workings of the industry at the CMR and ICCW.
Year 1
You will study 6 core modules that combine taught and work-based learning elements in your first year. Each module is 20 credits.

- Work-based Learning in Event Operations 1
- Marketing and Consumer Behaviour
- Becoming a Professional: Enterprise Project
- Work-based Learning in Event Operations 2
Year 2
Year Two builds on the foundations of Year One and focuses on the learning of theory and its practical application to allow students to start to build more in-depth knowledge of management within the events industry. In this year, students will study in USW and work on high profile events at our industry partners, which will increase students motivation and commitment to their planned careers.
You will study six 20 credit core modules in the second year that combine taught and work-based learning elements:
- Accounting for Event Professionals
- Events Project and Risk Management
- Live Event Production 1
- Events Professional Practice and Employment Experience
- Digital Marketing in Events
- Live Event Production 2
Year 3
Year Three provides the culmination of studies and focuses on the critical thinking skills to explore the way that strategy and growth is key for the effective management of international events. Alongside specialist modules, students will have the opportunity to plan, manage and run their own live event at the CMR/ICCW and plan and undertake their own research and become an expert on their work. Students will work with organisations on a particular business challenge and draw on the knowledge that has been developed on the course to solve those challenges in an innovative and creative fashion.
You will study four 20-credit core modules that combine taught and work-based learning elements in the third year, plus a Dissertation or Consultancy Report (40 credits).

This course also offers the opportunity to gain extra events-relevant qualifications such as:
- APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) - (SCQF Level 6)
- Emergency First Aid Course
- IOSH Managing Safely Certificate
- Security Industry Authority License
- Event Safety Passport
- BII National Licensees Certificate
Teaching
The modules are normally studied in blocks of three each term to enable students to develop the depth of analysis and understanding. Alongside your class time you will also engage in industry experience and field trips with our industry partners. For example, for the Work-based learning in Event Operations 1 and Work-based learning in Event Operations 2 modules you will spend approximately 50 hours/module undertaking work-based learning which may require some unsocial hours and may be undertaken in 8 hour shifts across a number of weeks.
The Business School and wider Faculty provides a range of guest lectures by people working in the industry who will provide you with insight into today's events environment and business strategy and careers opportunities, that students would be encouraged to attend.
Research
Your studies will be underpinned by the latest research undertaken by the South Wales Business School Research Group. This means you will be taught by academics who are at the forefront of their specialist field.
Assessment
The course is assessed in a variety of ways. As well formal methods students will be expected to evidence a wide range of skills through industry-focused presentations and reflective writing.
As the International Business world is the focus of study, the different styles of report writing will instil the relevant skills for students.

Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.
Typical A-Level Offer
BCC - CDD (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical Welsh BACC Offer
Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical BTEC Offer
BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical IB Offer
Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 29 overall including 5 or above in English at standard level.
Typical Access to HE Offer
Pass the Access to HE Diploma and obtain a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points.
Additional Requirements
GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances

Career
The course equips students for careers in management in a range of sectors and particularly within an international context. Graduate trainee opportunities with international companies would be suitable career starting points on completion of the course.
How does the course prepare me for employment?
Students on our existing Events Management degree already have excellent rates of employment on graduation and this new course will focus career opportunities further. As the delivery of the course is undertaken in partnership with the CMR and ICCW, it is envisaged that students will have accelerated opportunities within these companies. Career pathways will also be available in a variety of private, public, non-profit or voluntary organisations, large or small.
Graduates will be well-placed to pursue their careers in a range of fields including events management and general management, as well as the wider areas of marketing, public relations, business development, advertising, sales, or product development. Graduates may become involved in venue management, leisure management, tourism marketing, sports promotion, corporate events & hospitality, arts/film festivals, or entertainment/media industry based roles anywhere where events play a substantial role.
As well as field trips, industry experience and the dissertation/consultancy project, the Business School supports the USW Enactus branch. Enactus is an international organisation that works with students in developing socially responsible businesses. Students have the ability to become members of the USW branch to work with students in other subject areas on a series of projects that impact the community.
Students will gain a wider range of skills including: critical thinking; problem identification and solving; understanding international contexts; and project management.
This course is unique within the University sector in the way that industry experience is entwined within student learning. The course has been designed in partnership with the CMR and ICCW and other organisations and so clearly address the needs of the industry. It will also continually reflect trends within the sector.
There are a number of unique elements to the course:
- One of the few International Events Management courses in the UK allowing students to be directly involved in the planning and management of events with an international audience from the very start of their study.
- The only International Events Management course in the UK with placement experience with world renowned organisations including the ICCW and CMR.
- Additional industry exposure throughout study, including private and public sector organisations.
- A variety of opportunities to plan and manage live events in practice.
- Inclusion of a module on Sustainable Events Design and Experience at Level 6, (not offered in many competitor courses) which addresses ISO 20121 and United Nations SDGs.
- The added-value of completing events-relevant qualifications such as APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) - (SCQF Level 6), Emergency First Aid Course, IOSH Managing Safely Certificate, Security Industry Authority License, Event Safety Passport and BII National Licensees Certificate during the degree
