Bachelor of Design in Product Design

    About

This course is designed for those aiming to excel in the product design industry, offering a pathway to careers that shape our material world. Choose this course for its immersive, hands-on approach that bridges theory with practical application, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation. Its distinctiveness lies in the integration of cutting-edge technologies like UX and digital fabrication, coupled with a focus on design that impacts everyday life and global challenges.

You will acquire a robust set of skills, including complex problem-solving, creative ideation, and the ability to prototype and test innovative design solutions. Learning occurs through direct engagement with materials and technologies in state-of-the-art workshops, complemented by a curriculum that balances technical prowess with an understanding of cultural and economic contexts.

By the end of the course, you'll be equipped not only for diverse roles in product development, sports technology, health, and humanitarian work but also for further specialisation or research in this dynamic field. Your education will be a blend of core subjects and electives, allowing you to tailor your expertise to areas like furniture design or sustainable practices, with the potential to lead your own design enterprise.

UTS believes a hands-on approach is fundamental for every aspiring designer. As such, the student's starting point is the individual design and making of an object. Throughout their studies students learn how to design, prototype and test design solutions, drawing on cutting-edge technologies and approaches, such as UX (user experience), wearables and electronics and gain hands-on experience in the faculty's digital and fabrication workshops.

Alongside a strong technical base, the degree applies the creative problem-solving required to design experiences that make a difference to everyday life, whether in developing economies or digital cultures. Central to this approach is an understanding of the relationships between objects, culture, economy, technology, business and human behaviour.

    Course aims

This integrated approach to education prepares graduates to work in product design and related design professions both locally and internationally. Alongside the core subjects, students can take electives that further develop a specialisation, such as furniture design; designer-maker enterprise; advanced digital design and manufacture; and environmentally responsible design practices. After graduation students can also pursue further study in specialised fields like vehicle design and clinical design, or further academic study in product design related research.

    Innovation and Transdisciplinary program

Transdisciplinary Electives at UTS Employers tell us the skills our graduates acquire from undertaking a Transdisciplinary Elective sets them apart from the crowd. That’s why we have embedded this program into every undergraduate degree. All you need to do is choose the Elective that inspires you the most. Transdisciplinary Electives integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines, allowing you to approach complex problems from a range of perspectives. By combining methods and insights from various disciplines, transdisciplinary learning often leads to breakthrough ideas and creative innovations that may not be possible within the confines of a single discipline. If you find yourself rapt by the world of innovation – you can pair your core degree with a Diploma in Innovation, graduating with two qualifications in the same timeframe. In both instances, you’ll work on a real-world challenge presented by an industry partner organisation – partners who often create career pathways for our graduates. * Excludes students concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation.
