About

Overview

Understanding the changing nature of the climate allows us to prepare for the future and implement strategies to mitigate the impact of humans on biodiversity and the environment.
In this major you will explore climate policy and climate change, develop skills in maths, statistics, programming and climate modelling as well as resource management.
Gain hands-on skills from your first year with laboratory sessions, site visits, field work and industry placements.
Benefit from industry opportunities, such as the Graduate Meteorology Program with the Bureau of Meteorology equipping you with the qualifications and skills to become the next generation of Meteorologists at the Bureau.
Learn from leading research taking place in the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences (CACS), focusing on fundamental climate science research, environmental/disaster risk reduction, economic systems and climate systems modelling in agriculture and water resources.

Entry requirements

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

English (Units 3 & 4, C)

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at high school level (typically studied in Year 12). Find out more about assumed knowledge.

Subject pre-requisite: General Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C) or equivalent.
Recommended prior study: Mathematical Methods and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics or equivalent. If students do not have the recommended Mathematical Methods Level for entry then they will be required to undertake MAT1000 Mathematics Fundamentals as an elective.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study with our English language partner, the Union Institute of Language (UIL), or if you're a domestic student you can apply to study UniSQ Ready courses TPP0122 and TPP0123.

English Program Requirements

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows students to gain credit (advanced standing) towards their course in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Graduates may find work as a climate scientist, climate policy consultant, a climatologist or climate policy analyst.
Graduates may work for resources/mining industries, government departments and agencies, local councils, consultancy, national parks, universities, defence organisations, CSIRO, Australian Bureau of Meteorology and other organisations contributing to sustainable utilisation and management of our natural resources.
