    Bar Training Course (PgDip)

    About

    Bar Training Course (PgDip)

    Full time

    Why study this course

We’ve delivered high quality training for the Bar since 1997, strongly supported by the local employed Bar, the independent Bar and the Judiciary.

    A unique offering

We are the only Russell Group University to offer a Diploma in Bar Training.

    Learn from professionals

All our tutors have practised as barristers or solicitors and their ethos is one of friendly professionalism and mutual respect.

    Highly regarded training

We are one of the top performing providers across the centralised examinations set by the BSB for the Bar Training Course.

    Significant face to face support

Our staff/student ratio ensures you receive substantial individual feedback and support to prepare you for the BSB centralised assessments.

Our Pg Dip Bar Training Course is a skills-based, intensive full-time 10-month course designed to prepare a prospective Barrister for the period of work-based learning, known as pupillage.

This programme enables you to acquire the skills, knowledge of procedure and evidence for you to meet the Bar Standards Board (BSB) criteria, as set out in their Professional Statement for Barristers.

Our programme aims to foster a professional and ethical approach to practice as a barrister, whilst giving you an informed view of a barrister’s working life and the opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing the legal profession in today’s world.

Our teaching is timetabled between Monday and Thursday (i.e. no more than four days), to provide time for personal study. Advocacy and conferencing will be taught intensively in two-hour sessions to no more than six students. You will also be able to undertake a specialist advocacy option.

You’ll also have the opportunity to undertake the BSB centrally set assessments in December, April and August during the academic year you are enrolled as a student.

On successful completion, you'll be eligible to be called to the Bar of England and Wales (subject to meeting the qualifying session requirement of your Inn of Court).

    Accreditations

The School has fantastic facilities and approachable, stellar staff, enjoying close proximity – both in a geographical and relationship sense – to the local legal profession and institutions.

    Career

    Bar Training Course (PgDip)

    Full time

    Careers and placements

After completion of the BTC, you will be able to be Called to the Bar and undertake pupillage. The BTC may also lead to legal work in some other capacity, e.g. paralegal, with the option of obtaining pupillage at a later date.

    Placements

You may have the opportunity to marshall with a Judge and/or undertake a mini-pupillage, subject to availability of professional partners.

I am currently a Senior Legal Counsel and Vice President at an international asset manager based in Munich, specialising in international investment funds. I utilise the skills and knowledge I amassed on the BTC on an almost daily basis, even though I am not working as a Barrister or indeed in litigation. This course taught me how to practise law, as opposed to theorise the law. In other words, how to quickly and accurately research the applicable law and apply it to a particular case.
