    Bioengineering

    About

Bioengineering is the application of engineering practices and principles to analyse and design new processes, tools and techniques, in order to bridge gaps across biological and healthcare challenges. It applies fundamental engineering principles to the innovation and design of new products and processes, and plays an integral role in global issues where the challenge or solution is biological in origin.

Our Bioengineering degree draws from our expertise across several academic departments and will give you a thorough grounding in engineering systems and applications relevant to bioengineering. You will also gain a sound understanding of human anatomy, physiology and biological functions and the ability to apply your knowledge and skills to bioengineering problems.

The field is rapidly developing, and bioengineers work in a wide variety of sectors globally, developing products and creating technology to help people achieve a better quality of life and break barriers in medical and sporting achievements. Examples include prosthetics and biomaterial implants, software engineering for advanced and 3D medical imaging, image-guided and robot assisted surgery, regenerative medicine against incurable diseases, tissue engineering such as bioengineered skin for wounds, 3D bioprinting, medical device development and new assistive technologies (wearable technology, mobile and e-health).

At Loughborough, our course will take you from the fundamental science and engineering to the cutting-edge of the subject. During your time with us, you will have access to our state-of-the-art experimental labs to complement your lectures. In year three, students will complete a research project on a specific topic of interest supervised by a member of academic staff.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Students taking the Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate) will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year.

Loughborough University has its own Foundation Year for high-calibre international students who have successfully completed 12 years of school education. Alternatively, please contact the International Office to check if the Foundation Programme that you are considering taking is acceptable for entry to Loughborough courses.

Students with A Level or IB qualifications will be considered for direct entry to undergraduate degree courses. Please see the undergraduate prospectus for specific course requirements. Requirements for American SATs and APs can be found under the country requirements for USA.

Students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

    English Program Requirements

The standard University IELTS English language requirement is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Some Schools/Departments may require higher levels of English language than those specified. The requirements needed, will be sent to you in your offer communication.

For Research Degrees, some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English language qualifications due to the nature of the research work involved. Details will be included in your offer letter if this applies.

For Undergraduate Degree courses, some Schools/Departments may require higher levels than those specified.  These higher levels are detailed, where relevant and more information can be found here.

English language tests should have been taken within the previous two years. Where a school-based qualification is used to meet the English language requirement, this should have been taken within the past ten years. Evidence of continuing use of English, whether in the workplace or elsewhere, in the intervening period may be considered as supporting evidence of English language ability where a qualification was taken more than ten years ago.

    How to Apply

    Register with UCAS

Before you can do anything, you will need to register with UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). This is the official application route for the majority of full-time undergraduate courses.

If you are at school or college, you will be given a buzzword which will associate your account with your institution. It will also allow your teacher to input their reference.

    The application consists of 6 sections, these include;

    • Section 1: Personal Details
    • Section 2: University Choices
    • Section 3: Formal Qualifications
    • Section 4: Employment History
    • Section 5: Personal Statement
    • Section 6: Reference

These sections can be completed in any order, but it’s important that before you submit your application each section is checked prior to submission, to ensure there are no mistakes.
