Biomedical Data Science and Modeling (M.S.)
Biomedical Data Science and Modeling (M.S.)
About
As part of Illinois Institute of Technologys mission to provide a distinctive and relevant education that focuses on preparing its students for careers that contribute to solving important problems facing humanity, the Department of Biomedical Engineering is now offering the Master of Science in Biomedical Data Science and Modeling program. This program will provide the training relevant for professional employment in computational biomedical engineering. Special emphasis is placed on the principles of mathematical modeling, machine learning, biostatistics, and bioinformatics. The program will prepare students to be able to identify problems related to mathematical modeling, to carry out statistical analyses of biomedical data, to implement machine-learning methods for biomedical applications, and to solve biomedical engineering problems in bioinformatics. Aligning with two of Illinois Techs university-wide research initiatives—Computation and Data, and Health and Wellness—the biomedical data science and modeling program will provide its graduates with the fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience needed to thrive in the ever-evolving and fast-growing biomedical engineering field.

Requirements
Entry Requirements
Students interested in the biomedical data science and modeling program must have graduated from an engineering or science bachelors degree program with a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale to be admitted. Prospective students should also have a GRE composite score of 300 and quantitative score of 80 percent, and have prior coursework that demonstrates proficiency in math and computer science.
English Program Requirements
International students who fit into any of the following categories will be considered to have met the requirement:
- Residents of a country where English is the only official language and who is a native English speaker
- Graduates of U.S. high schools
- Completed the equivalent of Iowa State’s English 150 or 250 with a grade of B or better at an accredited U.S. 2 year or 4 year college or university.
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
If you meet all admission requirements but do not meet our English proficiency requirements, Iowa State offers conditional admission to attend our Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP). If you would like to enroll in IEOP, on the application choose "I would like to enroll in Iowa State’s IEOP program before I begin the academic study.”
Career
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a faster-than-average growth—a 5 percent increase—for biomedical engineering jobs from 2019–2029. Among the careers that graduates can pursue include:
- Computer scientist
- Information research scientist
- Data scientist
- Process development scientist
- Software engineer
- R&D biomedical engineer
- Bioinformatics engineer
