    Biopharmaceutical Engineering

    About

The biopharmaceutical field is a continually changing industry that has classically been separated into upstream (drug formulation and development process) and downstream (process and manufacturing) components, with chemical engineering playing a critical role in both of these areas. The future of this field will depend upon innovative new engineers who are able to easily communicate with people on either side.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Freshman Admission: Applicants who have not attended a college or university upon completion of secondary school AND who have met all requirements including English proficiency as noted below.
    • Transfer Admission : Applicants who have attended a college or university upon completion of secondary school AND met all requirements including English proficiency as noted below.
    • Non-degree Admission: Applicants who are exchange or visiting students.
    • Conditional Admission: Applicants who meet UK’s academic requirements for admission but do not meet the minimum language proficiency requirement or the departmental specific requirements (such as certain SAT/ACT math scores for Engineering and Nursing).
      • Students who are offered conditional admission because of English may either resubmit a higher TOEFL/IELTS score or enroll in UK's Center for English as a Second Language program. The duration of these courses will depend on placement test results and individual student progress. Upon successful completion of the English language course(s), the student will move seamlessly into a degree program at UK. This means no TOEFL/IELTS scores will be required if students complete CESL.
      • Students who require a higher math score for Engineering may submit a higher score or switch their intended major to a program that does not have specific requirements.
      • No additional application is required for Conditional Admission.

    Career

The goal of this program is to provide students a cohesive view of basic biopharmaceutical principles, so that they can more readily apply their engineering skills to this diverse discipline. The National Academy of Engineering recognized engineering better medicines as one of its Grand Engineering Challenges. This challenge includes both the design of better medicines and systems to produce these medicines on a large scale under strict regulatory controls. To meet this need, the pharmaceutical field will need engineers who have solid foundations in both chemical engineering and basic pharmaceutical principles. This educational experience will prepare students who have interest in formulation design to continue onto graduate programs in pharmaceutical studies and related fields. Students who are focused on process production will be uniquely trained to enter directly into the pharmaceutical industry.
