    About

BSc. Chemical Engineering / Program Overview

Background to the program and subject area:
The Chemical Engineering Department was established in 1978. The Department has established itself as the primary supplier of B.S. chemical engineers in Jordan. The Chemical Engineering B.Sc. programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET,https://www.abet.org, the recognized U.S. accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing , engineering and technology.

Furthermore; the department launched the master degree program by1986 which made the department a research force to be reckoned in Jordan. The Department offices are located in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Jordan.
The Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Jordan prides itself on preparing its students for creative careers in industry, academia, and government. The department is a community of outstanding researchers, experienced educators, distinguished engineers, and talented students.
Research activities undertaken by the faculty span a wide range of chemical engineering topics including, but not limited to, separation processes, transport phenomena, reaction engineering, molecular thermodynamics, membrane processes, safety engineering, renewable energy, wastewater treatment, and computer aided design.
Moreover, the department is well equipped for teaching and research facilities. For teaching purpose; the lecture halls are equipped with the latest teaching technology including interactive boards, data show, projectors and computers. Likewise the teaching laboratories such as fluid mechanics, the heat transfer and mass transfer, the reaction, which are used to insight the theoretical knowledge to the practical application. On the other hand, the research laboratories involve many up to date equipment in order to facilitate the currently undertaken research in the department including fuel processing, analytical chemistry, membrane processes and desalination, biochemical engineering, safety engineering. Computer halls for both undergraduate and graduate students are also available.
Currently, there aresixteen faculty members in the department with different academic affiliations of assistant professors, associate professors and professors. It worth's mentioning that all the academic staff in the department are well educated and have obtained their degrees from highly ranked universities in North America, Great Britain and Europe.
Prof.Deeb Abu Fara is currently the chairman of the department.

    Vision statements of the program:
To be one the leading Departments of Chemical Engineering in Jordan and the Arab world where the fundamentals of science, the principles of chemical engineering, and the highest professional and moral conduct are fused into multi-disciplinary teaching and research programs aimed at producing world-class graduates and research.

    Mission statements of the program:
Our mission is to provide students with quality chemical engineering education, provide services, and carry out basic and applied research. The program mission is in full agreement with stated University and College missions.

    Program Aims:
Graduates of the chemical engineering program are expected within a few years of graduation to:
Demonstrate their ability to integrate and apply knowledge, skills, professional ethics and leadership at national, regional and global levels.
Demonstrate their ability to work successfully both independently and in team functioning effectively as responsible professionals.
Establish themselves as distinguished professionals in industry, academia and other related fields.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Students with a high school diploma or its equivalent from outside Jordan can enroll in higher education institutions directly through websites of public and private universities or intermediate community colleges based on their averages. Universities implement the credit hours system, which allows students to choose courses according to their study plan.

Students wishing to enroll in a master's program must hold a bachelor's degree. Furthermore, students who wish to enroll in doctoral programs must hold a master's degree.

In addition, students wishing to enroll in postgraduate programs are required to provide a certificate confirming their English proficiency level in a TOEFL or IELTS exam. They could also demonstrate a certain proficiency level in French or German. Lastly, they could take an English language exam held by the higher education institution they apply in.

In the event that the student fails to prove the required level of English, German or French, or fails the English equivalency exam, they may study a qualifying program in English at the university where they undertake additional six credit hours; he/she must score a minimum grade that varies according to their specialization.

    Career

    BSc. Chemical Engineering / Employability

    Potential Careers
Graduates are qualified to work as engineers in different fields:
    Industrial fields:
The industrial fields that are supervised by chemical engineers are very large, mainly chemical, oil and petrochemical industries, nanotechnology, paint industry, food and pharmaceutical industries, plastics industries, water desalination, cement industry, fertilizer industry, pollution control and reduction, Corrosion.
Follow up the security and safety issues in the factories:
The safety engineer is responsible for the safety of workers from the hazards of various chemicals, according to their knowledge of them and how to deal with those hazards, in different factories such as oil and petrochemicals, it is imperative for the engineer of security and safety to give approval for any maintenance site after inspecting the workplace.
    Engineering Designs:
Chemical engineering is concerned with the study of the engineering designs related to the various chemical industries. The chemical design is a production and commercial objective. It is the science of gathering information to reach the optimal design through the selection of the industrial process and its conditions, the chemicals used therein and the necessary equipment to complete the industrial process. In addition to the responsibility of the chemical engineer to organize, arrange and follow up the units correctly and calculate the feasibility of the whole process involved in the production.
    Scientific Research:
Chemical engineers conduct many scientific types of research in the universities and factories, such as finding effective methods of waste disposal without harming nature, finding solutions to problems in different industries and other scientific research.
    Engineering Consulting:
This work requires the chemical engineer to have a high academic degree so that he is qualified to work in all fields of chemical engineerings, such as in the environmental and other fields.
