Course overview
Take your place at one of the UK's largest Chemical Engineering departments with a tradition of experimental research. Join pioneering research teams as you build skills for a promising future career.
You’ll receive an excellent research experience at Birmingham. Develop a diverse range of skills to equip you for a research career in science. You'll also learn key transferable skills that will be invaluable for pursuing a career in any discipline.
I was also pleased with the support I got at the beginning of the course and the freedom to experiment and plan the research on my own. I am free to plan my own experiments, but in case there is a problem I can always get support.
Programme Structure
Your work as a PhD student will mainly be based in the School of Chemical Engineering, but many of our research projects involve collaboration withexternal industrial and government organisations. Below is an indicative idea of what you could spend your time on, but your research may be different to this and will be discussed in advance with your supervisor.
You will work with your supervisors to define the structure of your project, start to review the scientific literature and set out the scope of work that you will undertake. Opportunities to work with colleagues at Birmingham, other universities and from industry may be involved, depending on the nature of the project that you plan.
