This award is for healthcare professionals who administer cytotoxic chemotherapy for patients with cancer. On completion you reach the required standard for practice by the North of England and the national standard Cancer Quality Measures (DH, 2004).

The award addresses the skills required for the administration of chemotherapy as well as the underpinning evidence for the treatment given. The holistic needs of both the patient and the family are addressed, as are the health and safety and emergency procedures required to protect the patient.

You have contact sessions with the module leader. Key lectures, seminars and group work prepare you for your specialist chemotherapy competencies attainment and help you identify your learning needs. This includes performing a SWOT analysis and developing a learning contract.

You are assessed on the achievement of your chemotherapy clinical competencies through a portfolio of evidence by an advanced practice mentor approved by the North of England Chemotherapy Network. The mentor will be an advanced chemotherapy practitioner from your clinical area, who will support you throughout the award to successful completion of your chemotherapy competencies.

You undertake a formative review of progress at designated points throughout the award. Summative assessment takes place through the successful achievement of all portfolio benchmarks and submission of appropriate essential evidence, including a 3,000-word case study.
