Enhancing Competency for Practitioners Working with Children and Young People who Require High Dependency or Emergency Care

    About

You enhance your knowledge and understanding of a range of presentations and initial measures to stabilise the child. The focus is on the multi-disciplinary team; developing a care plan related to emergency and high dependency settings. You study the assessment of potentially life-threatening symptoms in children from birth to adolescence, from the first point of contact until the child's discharge or transfer. You link theory to practice through case studies and patient simulation.

This award runs from April - June with three days of attendance, three days of timetabled guided study and 200 hours of independent learning. It is delivered using a blended approach of lectures, seminars, skills sessions and online activities.

    Funding 2022/23
Funded places may be available. You will be notified if you are eligible for a funded place within your organisation once you have applied.

This award meets the needs of healthcare professionals working with sick children who are at risk of serious illness and life-threatening deterioration.

You study anatomy and physiology and developmental stages from birth to adolescence alongside the pathophysiology associated with presenting symptoms and specific interventions. These are linked to triggers and symptoms of childhood illness to facilitate theory/practice links.

This award promotes critique and discussion between you and your lecturers, using a blended learning approach to gain further knowledge and clinical skills related to the management of the highly dependent child or adolescent. You work with experienced practitioners from emergency and high dependency environments and senior lectures with a background in children's nursing to participate in skills sessions and simulation; in addition to key lectures, seminars, facilitated problem-solving and directed case study analysis.

You are supported in the classroom and by the University Virtual Learning Environment, e-learning@tees, with academic guidance available through the recording of lectures, tutorials and additional learning materials including pre-reading, module information and directed learning focusing on acute illness and associated skills delivery.

The award has three contact days where you explore the needs and management of acutely ill children who are highly dependent on others to maintain their safety. Technology enhances teaching and there are interactive simulation sessions with opportunities to engage in clinical decision making and teamwork and receive feedback on participation and learning.

The summative assessment is in week ten of the module with a three-hour written examination with four unseen questions related to a seen scenario. The scenario is selected by the module leader from a selection of four scenarios given to you in your handbook. Electronic feedback is provided through e-vision.
