Course overview
Enhance your career by engaging in research that addresses today's societal challenges with a PhD Civil Engineering. By applying our research to real-world scenarios, you'll develop innovative solutions that shape the communities of tomorrow and leave a lasting impact for future generations.
You'll explore a diverse range of research topics, including fluid mechanics and environmental, structural, and transport engineering, opening up numerous opportunities in both academia and industry.
I decided to study here at the University of Birmingham because the research community here in this department has been second to none. When I came here on the open day nearly two and a half years ago, everyone I spoke to, whether it was a student member or a staff member seemed friendly, easy to get along with.
Programme Structure
You'll be given opportunities to attend research conferences and workshops throughout your studies. Below is an indicative idea of what you could spend your time on, but your research may be different to this and will be discussed in advance with your supervisor.
You will work with your supervisors to define the structure of your project, start to review the scientific literature and set out the scope of work that you will undertake. Opportunities to work with colleagues at Birmingham, other universities and from industry may be involved, depending on the nature of the project that you plan.
