Our course takes you beyond the engineering difficulties of designing equipment for use on Earth’s surface. Instead, you'll develop the skills needed to design and build systems and platforms for the hostile environment of space.

Your first two years introduce you to elements of project management, engineering processes, professional practice ethics and sustainability. Because of a common course structure, you can switch between our electronic and electrical engineering BEng and MEng degrees and decide whether you want to go on placement up until the end of your second year. 

You'll grow your understanding of electrical engineering science before specialising in electronics and communications technologies with elements of space and planetary science. Your learning will be supported by the latest theory and practice in spacecraft engineering, space electronics, Earth observation, the space environment and weather. Group and individual project work throughout the degree challenge you to develop bold ideas and apply your knowledge of engineering in creative and innovative ways. Your ability to combine professional and technical engineering knowledge will prepare you for a career in the space industry and a range of other professions.

Our Department has sophisticated teaching, project and fabrication laboratories that you’ll use during your degree. These include power and robotics laboratories, workshops and printed circuit board (PCB) production facilities, dedicated project workspaces, and computer laboratories.

If you do not meet our English GCSE requirements, you will need a suitable English language qualification. Examples include:

• IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
• IELTS Indicator: 6.5 with 6.0 in each component

• TOEFL IBT and IBT Special Home Edition: 90 overall with 21 in each component
  
• The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element
• The Pearson Test of English Academic Online (PTE Academic Online): we do not accept this qualification
• Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): 180 with no less than 169 in all elements
• Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): 180 with no less than 169 in all elements
• Duolingo (taken up to 1 July 2024): 120 overall with sub scores of Literacy 120, Comprehension 130, Conversation 115, Production 100
• Duolingo (taken after 1 July 2024): 120 overall with sub scores of Literacy 120, Comprehension 120, Conversation 120, Production 120
• LanguageCert SELT: B2 Communicator High Pass in both the Speaking test and the Listening, Reading, and Writing test
