    Filmmaking BA (Hons)

    About

On this course you'll explore the medium of film, developing your own filmmaking practice while acquiring skills for professional work in the creative industries.

You will engage with innovative, ambitious ideas, developing successful films in groups and individually, and gain a practical knowledge of a range of filmmaking approaches. Your learning will be supported by technical inductions, workshops with industry professionals, guest lectures and field trips.

You'll produce films with high production value, through our moving image workshop and with specialist filming equipment. You will be able to experiment with digital and analogue formats, including shooting, processing and scanning 8mm and 16mm film. You will also have access to our 3D workshops, photography darkrooms, printmaking and animation facilities.

You'll be taught by academics who are active practitioners in the film industry, working as artists, directors, cinematographers, editors and producers; they offer access to unique work experience opportunities. For example, our students have participated in placements at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Film & Video Umbrella and Film London, among other organisations.

Level 3 qualifications (A-levels, BTEC Diploma, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Access Diploma, IB Diploma, etc.).

    Additional requirements

Please submit either an edited three-minute video or 15-20 page portfolio and that shows us the four values of questioning, curiosity, technical ability, and enthusiasm.

Your edited three-minute video should be made up of one or more clips from film projects you have made or worked on. Upload the clip to YouTube, Vimeo or similar platform and provide a link to the uploaded clip (and password if applicable) in a PDF document. Please leave the original soundtrack on your clips, do not replace the audio with a music track. Underneath the link on the document, please list your role on each film (i.e. individually made, cinematographer, editor, etc).

If you don't have practical experience of filmmaking, you can submit a digital portfolio. The images you select should show an eye for composition and a sense of visual storytelling and how images relate to each other in an edited sequence. This could be in the form of a storyboard, a sequential mood board, or a collage that explains the sequencing of images and events, and how a story can unfold through image, composition, blocking, lighting and how objects/characters ‘read' in a scene. Grounding this in research – the kinds of books, films and other media that inspire you – is always helpful.

If you choose to make a portfolio, combining your work into a PDF is a good way of ensuring that your portfolio is easy to access and stays the way you want it to look. A project may be spread over several pages or take up just one. You can use other formats to show your work by including links in your PDF (such as online links to a website, Instagram, Flicker or Vimeo account). You just need to be very careful that your links work and that they can be opened on different types of devices. You will be sent guidance on how to upload your three-minute video or portfolio when you have applied to your course.
